Sania Mirza turned 36 today.

Sania Mirza has carved her name as one of the best tennis players the nation has ever produced since she kickstarted her professional career in 2003.

Today, on the occasion of her birthday, let’s take a look at Sania Mirza’s glittering accomplishments of her decorated career.

  1. Wimbledon 2015

In 2015 Sania Mirza and her teammate Martina Higgins clutched the legendary title. In an intense final, they triumphed over Vesnina and Markova by 5-7, 7-6, and 7-5, leaving their mark in the history of the sport. Sania Mirza became the 1st Indian woman to win a Grand Slam doubles title when she won the women’s doubles title at The Championships in 2015. Sania Mirza called the Wimbledon victory the most special moment in her career.

2. Australian Open 2009

Sania Mirza became the first Indian woman to win a senior grand slam title when she teamed up with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi to win the Australian Open mixed doubles. The two Indian wildcards rebounded from their loss in the previous year’s Australian Open final to beat Nathalie Dechy of France and Israel’s Andy Ram 6-3 6-1 at Melbourne Park.

3. Junior Wimbledon title and Asian Games medal at 15

Mirza had shown her immense potential as a junior. She played her first ITF event in 2001 and won three singles and one doubles title in 2002 along with an Asian Games bronze medal in the mixed doubles (partnering Leander Paes) at only 15. The next year she played her first WTA main draw at Hyderabad as a wildcard and won the Girls’ Doubles title at Wimbledon (partnering Alisa Kleybanova)

4. 2005 US Open:

Mirza became the first Indian woman to ever make it to the fourth round of the US Open when she defeated Marion Bartoli 7-6, 6-4 in the third round of the 2005 season. She not only crushed the French player in straight sets but also dominated the entire contest. However, she had to endure defeat against Maria Sharapova in the following game

5. Winning 2020 return

In late 2018, Mirza announced she hoped to return to professional tennis in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics. After having celebrated her son’s first birthday and having spent more than two years off the professional circuit, she returned to the tour at Hobart International in January 2020 playing alongside Nadiia Kichenok. The newly formed team won the tournament beating second seeds Peng Shuai/Zhang Shuai in the final.
