The fifth and last game of the Ashes 2023 ended in England winning the game by 49 runs. At the start of Day 5 on July 31, Australia was looking like a favorite as they had 10 wickets in hand and around 250 runs to get. They had already shaved off 135 runs out of the 384 runs needed. In the first session, they lost three wickets but a partnership between Steve Smith and Travis Head steadied things up.
During the Lunch break, it started raining which meant that the second session was canceled and the TEA break was taken to ensure both teams had enough time to get a result in the game. With seven wickets and more than 130 runs needed, the visitors were in control. However, in the long last session of the series, England took seven wickets and ensured they didn’t lose the series.
With a 49-run win, both teams have shared the spoils, like in the 2019 series. Once again, Australia has managed to retain the urn but hasn’t been able to actually win the series in the United Kingdom.
Stuart Broad finished his international career with a wicket
Notably, after losing eight wickets, the likes of Todd Murphy and Alex Carey started to wag and started endangering England’s chances of winning as it happened in the first game. However, Broad, who announced his retirement after Day 3 of the game, took the last two wickets to win the game and end his international career on a high.
Given he hasn’t played any white-ball cricket since early 2016, there is no chance he will play in any of the leagues. Also, in a conversation with home broadcaster, Sky Sports, the T20 World Cup 2010 winner spoke about taking care of children in the near future. On the other hand, Moeen Ali, who came out of retirement, only for this series, has once again retired from Test cricket. He will now play white-ball cricket for the Three Lions.

Now hearing that the Aussie players did ask the England team about getting together half a dozen times but didn’t get a response and that allegedly the home team stayed behind locked doors #Ashes https://t.co/BopRk4iCaZ
