In the third game of the ongoing Lanka Premier League 2023, Babar Azam‘s Colombo Stars locked horns with Sarfaraz Ahmed’s B-Love Candy. The former is the current Pakistan skipper and Ahmed is his predecessor. Meanwhile, in the second game of the weekend doubleheader, the Strikers won the toss and elected to bat first. They had a poor start as they lost their skipper Niroshan Dickwella to Isuru Udana.

Pathum Nissanka (15) got run out by a pair of Thanuka Dabare and Sarfaraz. At 33/2, the likes of Babar and Nuwanidu Fernando put together 60 runs for the third wicket. Apart from the former’s 59 off 52 balls, no other batter could come up with significant contributions. However, the home side managed to get 157/6 with Udana taking three wickets and Mohammad Hasnain taking two.

In reply, the Candy side never got going as they kept losing regular wickets. Sarfaraz remained unbeaten for 16 runs in 21 balls and the team was restricted to 130/8, losing the game by 27 runs. For the home team, Matheesha Pathirana took three wickets. On the other hand, Naseem Shah and Jafferey Wandersey took two wickets each, and Mohammad Nawaz took one.

Babar Azam was adjudged Player of the Match

As it turned out, the Pakistan skipper’s innings became the difference despite it being not up to the T20 standards. After being given the Player of the Match award, the Champions Trophy 2017 winner said that the wicket was two-paced and tough to bat on.

‘Tried to build a partnership. The pitch was two-paced. It was tough to bat. I was trying to build a partnership. It was not an easy pitch, so tried to take it deep. There was extra bounce then I realised here we need proper batting till the 15th over and then we can charge. The rest of the boys played well,’ Babar Azam said in the post-match presentation.
