Lasith Malinga makes harsh assessment on Dewald Brevis after his difficult start to SA20 season

Published

Sri Lankan cricket legend Lasith Malinga has noted his frustration with Dewald Brevis in a recent newspaper column. The 20-year-old was compared to AB De Villiers when he took the world by storm. This earned the young batter a contract with Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022 season.

Brevis has scored just 18 runs from three games during the ongoing SA 20 league. His best score of 8 runs came during the last game versus the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. With five runs each in the first two games, there is pressure mounting on the former South Africa U19 batter.

Just before the start of the SA20 league, the right-hander had hit two centuries for his side the Titans. The young batter began with 110 and 47 versus the Warriors and followed it up with 110 and 0 versus the North-West.

Lasith Malinga shares his frustrations about Dewald Brevis

The T20 World Cup 2014 winning captain has come out and made stern remarks on Dewald Brevis. With just 18 runs from three games, it is fair to say time is running out for the MICT batter.

Writing in a newspaper column this is what Lasith Malinga observedI am still waiting for Brevis. He is a genuine match-winner. I’m still waiting…still waiting. He’s the guy who can create a huge impact for us”

The 40-year-old also said “Pollard is a highly experienced player in T20s. He is a calm guy, he analyses the game well. With Mumbai Indians, he would handle the pressure situations very well while batting. He is really happy and we are very happy for him. Similarly KG Rabada and Sam Curran are hugely experienced guys in franchise cricket. They are showing their experience here”

MICT are currently fourth in the table having lost to defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Batting first the Sunrisers side scored 202 from their 20 overs thanks to Jordan Hermann’s 106 off 62 balls. Dawid Malan played well to score 53 runs and add 138- runs for the first wicket.

In reply, MI Cape Town fell four runs short with Ryan Rickelton top-scoring with 58 runs. Rassie Van Der Dussen played well once again to score 41 runs to give his side a good start. This earned the MICT openers praise from the Sri Lankan pace bowling legend.

“This is the first time I am seeing this kind of consistent performance in T20s from the openers in the first six overs. I am hoping both Rassie (van der Dussen) and Ryan (Rickelton) can do the same in the future matches as well. All the youngsters watching MI Cape Town can learn how to take responsibility while batting from these two”, wrote Malinga.

Following India’s heavy loss to Australia in the first Test of the series, Australian media highlighted key concerns for the Indian team, including Rohit Sharma’s performance as captain. Pat Cummins and his team’s emphatic win by 209 runs sparked discussions about India’s bowling strategy and batting collapse.

Australian newspapers like The Age underscored Mitchell Starc’s lethal bowling display as a stark reminder of his prowess in Test cricket. Starc’s fiery spell dismantled India’s top order, a performance seen as pivotal in Australia’s dominant victory. The media also pointed out the pressure mounting on Rohit Sharma for tactical shortcomings, including field placements and decision-making under challenging circumstances.

India’s batting lineup faltered against Australia’s aggressive bowling, with only a few players resisting. Critics emphasized that the Indian team’s inability to adapt to the pink-ball conditions in Adelaide cost them dearly. The media also praised Australia for its disciplined approach, particularly the consistency of its pace attack, which Starc and Cummins led.

As the series progresses, this defeat puts India under immense pressure to bounce back, especially with the spotlight on Rohit Sharma’s leadership and the team’s resilience. Fans now await India’s response in the next Test.
