‘Utho, Practice karo, Gold jeeto, So jao’ – Fans praise Neeraj Chopra for winning Gold, Kishore Kumar wins Silver medal in Asian Games 2023

India’s star Javelin throwers, Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Kumar Jena have bagged medals in the ongoing Asian Games 2023. The former bagged a Gold medal, another one in his career since winning the Olympic 2021. Talking about the Indian Army Subedar’s performance in the Asian Games 2023 summit clash, he threw nearly 85 meters away. However, due to a technical glitch on the part of the officials, Chopra had to throw again.

However, despite being disappointed, the 25-year-old managed to throw as far as 82.38m and 84.49m in the next two throws. Chopra deliberately walked over the line after his third throw since it had not crossed the 80m mark. That led to it being declared a ‘no mark’. In his fourth throw, he managed to reach 88.88m, a season’s best, which was good enough to hold him seal gold.

Neeraj Chopra’s first throw was a very good throw: AFI

Meanwhile, after Chopra won Gold, the AFI president said that the first throw of the 2021 Olympic Gold medalist was a good one. The former also raised a question about why these things happen only to Indian athletes.

“Neeraj’s first throw was a very good throw. But they weren’t ready to measure it. Same thing also happened with Annu Rani (who won gold for India in women’s javelin throw event) yesterday. I don’t know why they are doing this with Indian athletes. They are trying to cheat us, disturb our athletes. Neeraj’s first throw was a very good one,” Anju Bobby George, who is a Senior Vice President Athletics Federation of India, told journalists after the event.

On the other hand, Chopra’s countryman and competitor, Kishore Kumar Jena won Silver. The latter took the lead with an 86.77m throw which was a personal best. Kishore’s third throw had come after there was another goof-up from the organizers, who initially red-flagged his second throw for crossing the throwing line.

For the first time in the history of the Asian Games 2023, the India cricket team participated in the tournament as the game made its comeback. A few years back, the game made its debut in what is supposed to be a competition meant for shorter-span sports. Meanwhile, the Men In Blue played the tournament for the first time. In the last few years, the Indian board had their apprehensions regarding this tournament.

Meanwhile, as the Asian side is one of the top teams in the world, they were seeded directly for the quarterfinal alongside Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. On the other hand, teams such as Nepal, Mongolia, Hong Kong, etc were playing Group games. Talking about India’s journey, they started against Nepal, a team that scored 300 runs in T20I cricket for the first time.

In the game, the Men In Blue amassed 200-plus runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal getting his maiden Asian Games cricket. Despite the Nepalese fighting back, they ended up losing the game by 25-odd runs. In the semis against Bangladesh, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side chased down 90 runs in just nine overs with Tilak Varma hitting a quick fifty. It seemed as if both teams batted on a different surface altogether.

On the other hand, Afghanistan did the unthinkable as they beat Pakistan in the second semis. With this, India and Afghanistan played each other in the summit clash of any sport for the first time.

India bags maiden Gold medal in the Asian Games

In the summit clash, India decided to bowl first after winning the toss. After all, it was a rain-impacted game. The way the pitch reacted, it looked like a 130-140 wicket. The Afghans reached 112/5 in 18.2 overs, the rain was stopped due to rain.

After a long delay, it was decided that the game couldn’t be completed. With India being seeded high than Afghans, they won the Gold medal. After the game, players such as Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, and Avesh Khan sang ‘Lehra Do’ song from ’83 The Film’ starring Ranveer Singh, and Deepika Padukone.

India vs Bangladesh

Team India faced Bangladesh in the semi-finals of Asian Games 2023. They were hoping to win the game to have a shot at the gold medal in the final on Saturday. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and chose to field first because of the sticky wicket. India brought in an extra spinner in the form of Shahbaz Ahmed in place of Avesh Khan.

The team’s decision to bowl first proved handy as they had Bangladesh on the ropes. The Bangladesh batters were struggling to time the ball. In an attempt to score runs the batters were giving away wickets easily. Sai Kishore was the pick of the bowlers as he gave away just 12 runs. He scalped three wickets during his four-over spell.

Washington Sundar was also amongst the wickets as he was able to take two during his spell. Arshdeep Singh, Tilak Varma, Shahbaz Ahmed and Ravi Bishnoi each got one wicket. These incredible spells help India to restrict Bangladesh to a mediocre total of 97 runs.

Tilak Varma shines as he guides India to final

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored his maiden T20I century in the quarter finals, departed during the first over itself. This gave Bangladesh a glimmer of hope of making an extraordinary comeback. But the magnificent partnership between Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad took the game away from the opposition.

The southpaw combined with the skipper to score handy runs for his side. Tilak Varma was playing shots at an incredible strike rate. He scored runs all over the park as he hit six sixes during his innings. Even the spinners who had assistance from the pitch were unable to faze the batter.

Ruturaj Gaikwad played an anchor knock and ensured that he got the team over the line during this crucial semi-final clash. He finished the match with 64 balls to spare which states the dominating win for Team India. India would now be facing the winner of the second semi-final of the Asian Games 2023 between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
