Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal set new records with his knock against England in Rajkot in the 2nd innings. Having a lead of 116 runs in the first innings, Jaiswal made the headlines with his batting. The youngster scored an unbeaten 214*(236), which included 15 fours and 12 sixes. The star batter broke many records as India took the game completely away from England.

With a third 150+ score to his name, Jaiswal has the greatest number of 150+ scores to his name from India at the age of 22 after the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, two former Mumbaikars. The Southpaw became the batter with the greatest number of sixes in a Test innings (12).

Only six other batters have converted their first three hundreds to scores of over 150 – Andrew Jones, Javed Miandad, Mahela Jayawardene, Brian Lara, Graeme Smith, and Matthew Sinclair. Jaiswal has hit 20 sixes in the series so far, the most for a batter in a Test series. Rohit Sharma hit 19 sixes in the series against South Africa in 2019. Shimron Hetmyer hit 15 sixes in the series against Bangladesh in 2018.

Yashasvi Jaiswal joins the elite club

With two double hundreds to his name in Tests, Jaiswal is the batter with the third most number of 200s for a batter at the age of 22. Don Bradman had four 200s to his name at the same age, while Graeme Smith and Vinod Kambli had three and two 200s to their name at 22. After Virat Kohli and Vinod Kambli, Jaiswal is the third Indian batter to score double hundreds in back-to-back Test matches.

While Kambli scored 224 and 227 against England and Zimbabwe in 1993, which came in two different series. Virat scored 213 and 243 in consecutive matches in the same series against Sri Lanka in 2017 at Nagpur and Delhi. Jaiswal had scored 209 at Vizag in the first innings and backed it up with a much more impressive knock in Rajkot despite suffering from back at the end of the third day.

Following India’s heavy loss to Australia in the first Test of the series, Australian media highlighted key concerns for the Indian team, including Rohit Sharma’s performance as captain. Pat Cummins and his team’s emphatic win by 209 runs sparked discussions about India’s bowling strategy and batting collapse.

Australian newspapers like The Age underscored Mitchell Starc’s lethal bowling display as a stark reminder of his prowess in Test cricket. Starc’s fiery spell dismantled India’s top order, a performance seen as pivotal in Australia’s dominant victory. The media also pointed out the pressure mounting on Rohit Sharma for tactical shortcomings, including field placements and decision-making under challenging circumstances.

India’s batting lineup faltered against Australia’s aggressive bowling, with only a few players resisting. Critics emphasized that the Indian team’s inability to adapt to the pink-ball conditions in Adelaide cost them dearly. The media also praised Australia for its disciplined approach, particularly the consistency of its pace attack, which Starc and Cummins led.

As the series progresses, this defeat puts India under immense pressure to bounce back, especially with the spotlight on Rohit Sharma’s leadership and the team’s resilience. Fans now await India’s response in the next Test.
