Neeraj Chopra adds another golden chapter in Indian athletics history

The 24-year-old Indian superstar is now the Olympic champion, World Championships silver medallist and Diamond League champion. All these he had achieved in just over a a year

“Felt really good, aaj aisa feel hua ki hum bhi global athletics ka ek hissa hain (I really felt tonight that I am a part of the global athletics fraternity too), and that I too can make fans happy seeing me perform,” he said after the season came to a close with a glitzy parade of the champions.

“They supported me a lot, a aaya sach mein. There were quite a few Indian fans, and locals too… crowd helped for sure, and my throws were consistent and the competition was really good for me.”

“Honestly, I don’t know [about the highlight of the season] but what I felt good most of all about entire season was my consistency. Koi baat nahi, 90m nahi lagi, woh ek mark hai aur uske liye pressure nahi le raha hoon (It’s alright I did not cross 90m and it is just a mark that I am not taking any undue pressure for).

“At almost all events we were able to win a medal or finish in a high position. But also to be honest, the fact that my uncle was here who introduced me to sports and friends who I started my javelin journey with, winning tonight was a little special,” Neeraj said.

“The warm-up throws went well but the start of the event was not good. The javelin slipped out a little bit from my hand.”

“The second throw felt good, and I was able to focus on the task. Wasn’t nervous [to perform in front of my family] as I used to be, now I have the experience of the global events.”

Chopra just can’t stop scripting history for India.

It was Chopra’s third appearance in the Diamond League Finals. He had finished seventh and fourth respectively in 2017 and 2018.

Chopra was also awarded a Diamond Trophy, USD 30,000 prize money and a wild card for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Ashwin, known for his exceptional spinner skills and vital contributions with the bat, leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations of cricketers.

The 37-year-old debuted in 2011 and quickly became a pivotal figure in Indian cricket. Over the years, Ravichandran Ashwin’s amassed an impressive 489 Test wickets, second only to Anil Kumble in India’s all-time rankings. I would like to showcase that in club-level cricket. So this will be my last day. I have had a lot of fun. I must say I’ve created a lot of memories alongside Rohitt and several of my teammates,” Ashwin said at the press conference.

“Obviously, there are a lot of people to thank. But, I would be failing in my duty if I didn’t thank the BCCI and the rest of my teammates. I want to name a few of them and all the coaches — Rohit, Virat, Ajinkya, and Pujara who have taken all those catches in the slips to help me get those wickets.”

Ashwin also thanked the Australian cricket team for being fierce competitors over the years.

“Also a big thank you to the Australian cricket team. They have been very fierce competitors. I have enjoyed playing alongside them.

“I won’t be taking any questions, but certainly, it’s a very emotional moment.”
