‘That shot was really unwanted’ – Fans react as Ollie Pope gets dismissed for 196 in an attempt to reverse scoop Jasprit Bumrah

Published

on

Ollie Pope has been dismissed for 196 by Jasprit Bumrah, which has marked the end of the innings for England. It was an unfortunate end for Pope, who played a brilliant knock in the middle. From 163/5 at one stage, England ended up scoring 420 runs in the 2nd innings. India will have to chase a target of 231 runs to win the 1st Test at Hyderabad.

Pope started the day with a score of 148 runs. At the other end, Rehan Ahmed perished early in the innings. Tom Hartley supported Pope well from the other end. The Indian bowlers seemed to be out of plans against the duo of Hartley and Pope. It seemed like the duo frustrated the Indians so much so that they resorted to defensive tactics to stop the flow of runs.

The duo ensured that England crossed the mark of 400 runs which led to a lead of over 200 runs. Pope was so good in his stay in the middle. The number three of England played reverse scoop very well. The Indian spinners had no answers to his whatsoever. There were a couple of dropped catches as well. But Pope was determined to get to his first 200 against India.

Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance gets Ollie Pope

Ravi Ashwin got rid of Tom Hartley which opened the floodgates for India. Ravindra Jadeja then dismissed Mark Wood for a duck. It meant that Pope had to take risks to get to his 200. That was when Bumrah was called back to the attack by the Indian captain. It was as if the best batter of England was up against the best bowler of India in the current Test.

Bumrah anticipated that Pope was going to take risks to get to his milestone. The star bowler cleverly bowled a slower delivery straight towards the stumps. As anticipated, Pope decided to reverse scoop the bowler. But the slowness in the delivery meant that Pope did not get the pace to clear it over the slip cordon. In the process, Pope was dismissed for 196.

Pat Cummins and his team’s emphatic win by 209 runs sparked discussions about India’s bowling strategy and batting collapse.

Australian newspapers like The Age underscored Mitchell Starc’s lethal bowling display as a stark reminder of his prowess in Test cricket. Starc’s fiery spell dismantled India’s top order, a performance seen as pivotal in Australia’s dominant victory. The media also pointed out the pressure mounting on Rohit Sharma for tactical shortcomings, including field placements and decision-making under challenging circumstances.
