Rohit Sharma with Percy Abeysekera in Colombo

Team India captain Rohit Sharma recently won the hearts of cricket fans with a heartwarming gesture. The veteran opener paid a visit to the famous Sri Lankan cricket fan Percy Abeysekera, aka Uncle Percy, at his residence in Colombo on Friday, September 8. Amidst the 2023 Asia Cup, Rohit spared some time to interact with one of the game’s biggest supporters and their pictures and videos went viral on social media.

For the unversed, Percy Abeysekera is a hardcore cricket fan who has been following the game since his childhood. Percy has been a constant presence in each of Sri Lanka’s home fixtures since the 1980s. The Sri Lankan cricket authorities have even allowed him inside the field to accompany the team after every match. Percy is also no stranger to Indian cricketers as he was once invited into the Indian dressing room in 2015 after Day 3 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Rohit fulfilled the dream of an ardent cricket fan

Now 86-year-old, the ardent enthusiast is reportedly struggling with illness and it was clearly evident in the image and videos. However, it was his dream to meet the Indian captain and it finally came true, and Percy and his family are overjoyed. Rohit was invited to Percy’s house by Gayan Senanayake, a fellow Sri Lankan supporter who had met the right-handed batter before.

Meanwhile, in a video of Percy’s media interaction, the legendary Sri Lankan supporter can be heard narrating a beautiful story of Rohit. Referring to the dressing room incident in 2015, Percy said, “Actually, in the India match, Virat Kohli was batting well, they went to the dressing room and called me. I went to the dressing room, and everyone started dancing and cheering. I danced with them.”

On the professional front, Rohit and Co will take on Pakistan in the Super Fours at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, September 10. The Indian opener got out cheaply in their group-stage encounter but smashed a blazing half-century against Nepal in the second match.
