US Open: Kyrgios stunned by big serving Russian, breaks racquets in anger

Nick Kyrgios’ quest for a maiden grand slam title ended after he was upset by Karen Khachanov in an epic US Open quarterfinal on Wednesday.

The Russian claimed a 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-7 6-4 victory over Kyrgios in five sets.

Kyrgios was impacted by a niggling leg injury throughout the match which hurt his chances.

After losing the first first set, Kyrgios managed to shake off the injury concern, playing through the pain and winning the second set.

However, Khachanov quickly returned serve by winning the third set.

Kyrgios then hit back, going to another level deep in the fourth set to win the tiebreak and force a decider.

But despite having the advantage of serving first in the fifth set, Kyrgios was immediately broken in the opening service game and never recovered.

At one stage, Khachanov produced a ‘golden game’ where he reeled off four consecutive aces.

It’s a hugely disappointing result for Kyrgios who was tipped to be the US Open champion this year.

Kyrgios was in red-hot form throughout the year and was the bookie’s favourite to win the US Open he knocked out World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round.

His chances were quite bright as Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas had been knocked out.

Not surprisingly, Kyrgios went into meltdown after his loss.

He smashed two of his rackets on the court in anger after shaking hands.

Khachanov will next play fifth seed Casper Ruud in the semifinals.
