Pakistan Cricket Board has terminated the contract of Mohammad Hafeez as the director of Cricket just three months after his appointment. The former Pakistan cricketer was appointed for the role following Pakistan’s poor performance in the ODI WC 2023. A lot of changes happened in Pakistan cricket in the last 3-4 months. There was a change in captaincy as well.

Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy after the big tournament. Shaheen Afridi and Shan Masood took over the leadership of the Asian team in T20Is and Tests respectively. However, things have not gone well for them in the last few months. Pakistan lost to Australia 0-3 in Tests and was humiliated 1-4 by New Zealand in T20Is. The results played a key role in the decision against Hafeez.

The cricket board of Pakistan took to X and thanked Hafeez for his little role. “The Pakistan Cricket Board extends heartfelt gratitude to Mohammad Hafeez, Director Pakistan men’s cricket team, for his invaluable contributions,” wrote the board of Pakistan on their social media handle. The decision came as a bit of a surprise, as three months was a very short tenure.

Hafeez’s passion for the game has inspired players’ – Pakistan Cricket Board

The board of Pakistan added in their statement that Hafeez’s role as the director of the board inspired many players. They claimed that his passion for the game and mentorship on away tours were of high importance. The Cricket Board of Pakistan concluded by wishing Hafeez luck in his future endeavours. “The PCB wishes Hafeez good luck and success in his future endeavours,” added the Pakistan Cricket Board in their statement.

“Hafeez’s passion for the game has inspired players and his mentorship during the tour of Australia and New Zealand have been of immense importance,” the statement of the Pakistan Cricket Board concluded. The next few days in Pakistan cricket will be challenging. While PSL can keep the fans away from criticism, Pakistan needs to regroup as the T20 WC 2024 is just a few months away from starting. The Asian side would love to make a statement in the tournament.
