Young Mumbai batter Yashasvi Jaiswal rose to prominence with his magnificent performance in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 for Rajasthan Royals. He was duly rewarded for his heroics as he received his maiden team India call-up for the multi-format tour of the West Indies. Notably, the young batter made it into the squads for the Tests and the T20Is. He dazzled on his international debut scoring 171 off 387 balls in the first Test at Dominica which India won by an innings and 141 runs. The second Test ended in a draw as the visitors won the series 1-0.

Jaiswal did not play a part in the three-game ODI series that India clinched 2-1. Nor was he named in the Playing XI for the first of the five T20Is that India lost by four runs. Now ahead of the second T20I, former India batter Wasim Jaffer has backed Jaiswal to replace Ishan Kishan, the current India opener alongside Shubman Gill. Notably, Kishan has been in blazing form with fifties in the second Test and each of the three ODIs. However, he was dismissed cheaply in the first T20I.

‘Ishan Kishan’s T20I form worries me’ – Wasim Jaffer

“I want to see Yashasvi Jaiswal. He should play as an opening batter. I want to see Jaiswal in place of Ishan Kishan. Ishan Kishan’s T20I form worries me. In the last 15 innings, he hasn’t even scored a 40, the strike rate is also too low. So, that’s a cause for concern, but he was in good form in ODIs. It’s a different format (T20I). He also had an ordinary IPL season,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

“Why not give an opportunity to the boy who played very well in the IPL? He won the emerging player award and is confident. I’ll definitely look towards that change. “The first T20I was played on a difficult pitch, so expecting them [Kishan and Shubman Gill] to play in that fashion (free-flowing mode) is too much expectation. It’s crucial to see the pitch for the second T20I. If it’s good enough, then our batters will obviously play well,” Jaffer added.
