WATCH: Ashish Nehra explains why Rohit Sharma is playing aggressive cricket in powerplay overs

Published

Former India pacer Ashish Nehra has simplified why Rohit Sharma has been able to bat aggressively in the powerplay overs. In the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, the India skipper, Sharma has been providing the team with quick starts in the first powerplay. The only game he didn’t play like this was against England in which the team lost three early wickets.

Even in the semifinal against New Zealand where the fans were expecting him to tone down a bit, the 36-year-old hit 47 off just 25 balls including four fours and as many sixes. In the end, the team ended up getting 397/4. In reply, despite their best efforts, the Blackcaps were bowled out for 327, losing the game by 70 runs. After the game, Nehra, who was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning side explained why Sharma has been doing what he does.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are playing an ODI World Cup final for the first time

The last time India played a final of an ODI World Cup in 2011, Kohli was part of the team while Sharma was left out. This time around, the latter is leading the team and the Delhi player is now the ex-captain of India. In the summit clash against Sri Lanka 12 years back, Kohli scored an important 35 runs for the team.

This time around, the right-hander is the highest run-getter with 711 runs and will remain at the top as the players who were competing with him are now out of the tournament. On the other hand, Sharma has 550 runs in 10 games including a hundred against Afghanistan. Both will look to dominate in the final against Australia on November 19, possibly their last ODI World Cup game. By the time the next ODI World Cup will be played, Sharma will be above 40 and Virat will be around 39.

Here’s what Shubman Gill has to say when asked about missing MS Dhoni

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill had an animated reply to a question asked about MS Dhoni. When asked if he and the Indian team miss the star batter, Gill claimed in a low voice that everyone in the team and fact in entire India misses the former Indian skipper. He felt that no matter where India plays, the former Indian wicketkeeper batter will be missed genuinely.

“The entire India misses Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni). It does not matter where we play, in Ranchi or anywhere in the world,” said Gill when asked about the CSK skipper. Gill was in the press conference ahead of the fourth Test between India and England. The youngster was asked a lot of questions about his form and the confidence he gained in the last two Tests.

Gill has been in good form in the ongoing series. The right-handed batter has adapted well to the number 3 position after failing to perform in the first Test. In the 2nd Test, the star batter scored 35 runs in the first innings and a much-required hundred in the second innings. At Vizag, Gill helped India to claim a crucial win against England to level the series 1-1.

Shubman Gill hopes to make the most of his form

When India went to Rajkot for the third Test, Gill did not have the greatest of starts as he was dismissed for a golden duck in the 1st innings. However, the Indian batter proved the critics wrong by scoring 91 runs in the 2nd innings. A big gorilla has been off Gill’s back. The youngster has been away from the criticism after his knock in the last two Tests against England.

He would be hoping to continue the form in the fourth Test which is set to take place in Ranchi. The city is the birthplace of Dhoni, the former Indian cricketer, who was instrumental in India winning the T20 WC 2007, the ODI WC 2011, and the Champions Trophy 2013 as a skipper. Gill will be in action against Dhoni later this year as the skipper of GT in the IPL 2024.

Is Shreyas Iyer really injured? Latest report has something else to say!

Shreyas Iyer

The latest report on Shreyas Iyer has shocked the fans to the core. The star batter was deemed unfit to play the last three Tests against England as he was declared injured after the 2nd Test in Vizag. The star batter reportedly had a groin injury and stiff back as per the statement of the Indian Cricket Board. He was hence released from the Indian squad.

As per the protocols, the star batter was sent back to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to recover soon. However, the latest report has claimed that the NCA did not report any injury from the right-handed batter. It is being claimed that the physios and other officials in the NCA have deemed Iyer to be as fit as ever.

The news has raised a lot of doubts amongst the followers of the Indian team. Iyer has been going through a rough patch with the bat in the longest format of the game for months now. He last hit a hundred in 2022 and has not been able to score even a fifty in a long time. While that is a matter of concern, the fans are worried about something else.

Has the Indian management faked Shreyas Iyer’s injury?

After the latest report, the fans are wondering if the Indian management deliberately declared him injured to get him replaced by someone else in the squad. At this point, the fans are claiming that the Indian Cricket Board does not have the confidence to declare their players to be dropped. Even in the past, India declared players injured to the doubts of the fans.

It is worth wondering if Iyer is actually injured. As per many reports, he was dropped from the team. It is claimed that he was not declared ‘Dropped’ to not be criticized by the fans of the batter. While nothing has been official yet, if what reports claim is to be believed, it might be a serious dent in the confidence of Iyer, who needs the backing of the management in tough times.

Multan Sultans won their third game on a trot in the PSL 2024. A good bowling performance in the middle overs phase and a brilliant finishing by Iftikhar Ahmed with some handy runs by Mohammad Rizwan helped the home side to entertain their fans with yet another victory. Lahore were good in patches but could not turn up as a team. They suffered yet another loss in the ongoing league.

Batting first, Lahore Qalandars posted 166 runs on the board. They lost the wicket of Sahibzada Farhan early. What followed was anchoring the innings by Fakhar Zaman. In an unusual way, the Southpaw could not get going and ended up scoring 41(36). Batters from the other end tried to compensate for his slow knock. Rassie Van Der Dussen scored 54(37).

Sikandar Raza hit 23(17). Some crucial cameos from Jahandad Khan and Carlos Brathwaite towards the end propelled Sultans to a good total of 166 runs on the board. Mohammad Ali and Usama Mir had yet another good outing where they picked wickets and were economical as well. Chasing 167, Sultans were under pressure straight away, thanks to the new ball spell of the opening duo.

Iftikhar Ahmed finishes the game for Multan Sultans

Shaheen Afridi and Zaman Khan were on fire. The skipper got the big wicket of Reeza Hendricks and Khan dismissed Dawid Malan for a golden duck. George Linde later dismissed Yasir Khan. The onus was on Mohammad Rizwan to take his side home. He did everything in his might to see off the run chase. Sultans made a surprising move of sending David Willey up the order.

Rizwan almost waged a lone war during his stay in the middle. The star batter scored 82 runs in 59 balls which included nine fours and three sixes. While Willey’s wicket did shake the confidence of the dressing room of the home side, Iftikhar Ahmed pulled off a good finish to the chase. His cameo down the order helped Sultans to register a hat trick of wins in the PSL 2024.
