It isn’t a sight one gets to see every day but Team India lost the first Test to England on Sunday. Despite a late fight from KS Bharat and Ravichandran Ashwin, England won the match by 28 runs.

Tom Hartley was the hero with the ball as he picked 7/62 with the ball in his debut Test. Ollie Pope was given the Man-of-the-Match award for his brilliant knock of 196. Fittingly it was Tom Hartley who took the final wicket when he had Mohammed Siraj stumped by Ben Foakes.

Needing 231 runs to win the game, India began with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal opening. The pair added 42 runs before Hartley struck twice in the same over pairing with Ollie Pope.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was out for 15 caught by Pope off Hartley and this was followed by Shubman Gill falling for a duck. The left-arm spinner struck for a third time when he dismissed Rohir Sharma for 39.

Axar Patel became Hartley’s 4th wicket when he spooned an easy return catch for 17. Joe Root and Jack Leach then got rid of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. Ben Stokes got rid of Ravindra Jadeja with an inspired piece of fielding for 2.

KS Bharat and Ravichandran Ashwin then fought back with a stand of 57 for the 8th wicket. Indian hopes were high again but Tom Hartley yet again got his team the wickets and won the game.

At the end of the game, Ben Stokes while speaking to the host broadcasters said “Since I’ve taken the captaincy on, we’ve obviously had a lot of fantastic moments as a team, we’ve had a lot of great victories, we’ve been involved in some amazing games. But I think where we are and who we’re playing against, this victory…100% definitely our greatest triumph since I’ve been captain”
