‘Shah us waqt bachha hoga’ – Fans react as Jay Shah says Sachin Tendulkar suggested MS Dhoni as captain in 2007

Team India entered the 1983 World Cup as underdogs but stunned the cricketing world by defeating two-time world champions West Indies in the final to win their maiden title. But after the Kapil Dev era, the Men in Blue had to endure a tough time until Sourav Ganguly took over the reins. India may not have won any major titles under Ganguly, but the team underwent a revolution during his tenure that laid the foundation for their success going forward.

After Ganguly’s captaincy era, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar was appointed but could not shine in the role as desired. Then the lot went to Rahul Dravid who managed to get a decent record. When Dravid stepped down in 2007, there was a question mark over India’s captaincy. But India soon realised that the baton was handed over to safe hands.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni succeeded Dravid as ODI captain of team India in 2007. Later in the year, he was appointed T20I captain and the following year, he was named Test captain. Dhoni is considered one of the greatest captains in the world for his immense contribution to Indian cricket. In his first year of captaincy, Dhoni led India to a major international title – the 2007 T20I World Cup.

Then in 2011, he led India to lift its second ODI World Cup title. Dhoni also holds the record as the skipper who has won the most international trophies after winning the Champions Trophy in 2013. Apart from these, the 42-year-old has also led India to victory in the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cup. His five-title campaign with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is also a record.

Meanwhile, Indian Cricket Board Secretary Jai Shah recently said that it was Sachin Tendulkar who suggested MS Dhoni’s name as the captain of Team India. Shah’s statement echoed several reports that the Indian Cricket Board had pushed Tendulkar to take over the captaincy post Dravid’s resignation. But Tendulkar politely declined the offer and suggested Dhoni’s name, according to reports.

Mohammad Rizwan has come under heavy fire for his performance during Pakistan’s loss to South Africa in a high-stakes match. Critics described his innings as lackluster, accusing him of playing a “shameless” and “criminal” knock that failed to meet the demands of the situation. His inability to accelerate scoring when required drew ire from fans and analysts alike, with many questioning his intent and decision-making under pressure.

While Rizwan’s cautious approach ensured some stability, it proved inadequate against South Africa’s aggressive game plan. His inability to shift gears in critical moments ultimately hurt Pakistan’s chances, and his performance sparked a broader debate about his role and strategy in the team’s batting order. Some commentators were particularly scathing, questioning how Rizwan could reflect on his effort given the circumstances.

The incident has added to the scrutiny of Pakistan’s overall performance in the tournament, with many demanding better strategies and execution from key players. Rizwan, regarded as a pivotal figure in the lineup, now faces the challenge of responding to the criticism and delivering under pressure in future matches.
