Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for a duck against South Africa in the first innings of the second Test at Cape Town. The right-handed batter did not look comfortable at all in his stay in the middle. In fact, the bowler was all over Iyer and trapped him with a beautiful setup. Iyer found himself in awry position and could not play the ball that was in the line.

Nandre Burger bowled on good length right from the word go against Iyer. The South African pacer kept on pitching in the right areas and asked the batter to poke at it. After bowling two similar balls, Burger got one to bounce a bit higher. Burger bowled in a similar length, and it bounced a bit more than Iyer expected it to. The ball took the outside edge and went straight to the keeper’s gloves.

Kyle Verreyne did not commit any mistakes and claimed a safe catch. Burger and SA appealed loudly, and the umpire did not deny it. There was a sense of happiness on the face of Burger after getting the wicket of the batter. The left-arm pacer has been impressive in the series till now. It was yet another moment to celebrate for the youngster.

Failure away from Asia for Shreyas Iyer

Iyer does not have a great record in the matches he has played outside India in Test cricket. He is famously touted to be a bad player of pace. His record is not impressive away from home. In India, Iyer averages 39 with the bat. In Bangladesh, the middle order batter averages 101 with the bat. But it is terrible in conditions like England and South Africa.

In England, Iyer has managed to score 19 and 15 runs respectively to average 17.00 with the bat. In South Africa, Iyer has managed to score 31 and 6 runs to have an aggregate of 37 runs in 3 innings, averaging just 12.33 at the moment. It points out the inability of the batter to bat in conditions that are not spin-friendly. The Indian number 5 needs to improve his record away from Asia.
