Aakash Chopra responded harshly to the Pakistan cricket supporter who referred to his squad as the “number 1” team. In a barely veiled dig at Pakistan’s challenges with terrorism as well as economic issues, the cricketer-turned-pundit said he recognised “a few things” wherein the country was considered a “global leader” and then asked the fan to clarify.

Prior to the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan was the top-ranked men’s ODI side, but India has now surpassed them after capturing the Asia Cup and two matches against Australia. Only the Men in Blue have held the top spot in the world rankings across all forms.

In response to Chopra’s tweet on X regarding Pakistan’s “unpredictability” throughout their first innings versus the Netherlands during the 2023 World Cup, the fan commented. Babar Azam and colleagues lost the game after being shut out for 286. The user said,

Pakistan, who were the pre-match favourites, put up a few partnerships but suffered three batting collapses. In the middle overs, Mohammad Rizwan as well as Saud Shakeel both scored 68 runs. Meanwhile no other batter got over the 20-run threshold.

The Dutch had well-thought-out preparations when they arrived, and precocious teenager Bas de Leede served as the standout bowler with his outstanding four-wicket haul. The Netherlands were unable to chase down the average total. They lost the game by 81 runs during their opening encounter of the ODI World Cup 2023

All of the eyes will be on Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi: Aakash Chopra

Babar Azam as well as Shaheen Shah Afridi were the names taken by the cricketer-turned-commentator as Pakistan’s important players prior to the game.

He said on his YouTube channel ahead of the game, “All of the eyes will be on Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi, when Pakistan take on the Netherlands. That is because irrespective of the opposition, they step up. The Netherlands have done well to each this point, but Pakistan will be looking to bring their A-game on the ground.”

Mohammad Rizwan has come under heavy fire for his performance during Pakistan’s loss to South Africa in a high-stakes match. Critics described his innings as lackluster, accusing him of playing a “shameless” and “criminal” knock that failed to meet the demands of the situation. His inability to accelerate scoring when required drew ire from fans and analysts alike, with many questioning his intent and decision-making under pressure.

While Rizwan’s cautious approach ensured some stability, it proved inadequate against South Africa’s aggressive game plan. His inability to shift gears in critical moments ultimately hurt Pakistan’s chances, and his performance sparked a broader debate about his role and strategy in the team’s batting order. Some commentators were particularly scathing, questioning how Rizwan could reflect on his effort given the circumstances.

The incident has added to the scrutiny of Pakistan’s overall performance in the tournament, with many demanding better strategies and execution from key players. Rizwan, regarded as a pivotal figure in the lineup, now faces the challenge of responding to the criticism and delivering under pressure in future matches.
