French Open: Serena stumbles, Federer withdraws
The French Open is losing its biggest stars in rapid succession.
After losing Naomi Osaka and Jennifer Brady to withdrawals, the Roland Garros tournament lost some more of its sheen as some big names went out of circulation.
Serena Williams crashed out after a two-set loss to 21-year-old Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, in the fourth round, losing 6-3, 7-5.
The defeat ends Williams’ quest to add to her 23 Grand Slam titles.
The only top 10 seeds left in the women’s draw are defending champion Iga Swiatek (8) and Sofia Kenin (4).
Swiatek will play Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round, while Kenin will take on 17th seed Maria Sakkari.
Federer withdraws
Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam title winner battled over three and a half hours to reach the last 16 with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 win over 59th-ranked Dominik Koepfer.
However, the victory came at a cost.
After the contest that ended at 1 am in the morning, Federer said he needed to recover in time for his favourite tournament – Wimbledon which is scheduled for later in the month.
Federer’s statement said, “After discussions with my team, I’ve decided I will need to pull out of the French Open today.”
“After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation it’s important that I listen to my body and make sure I don’t push myself too quickly on my road to recovery.”
Federer, who will be 40 in 2 months, is playing only his third tournament since last year’s Australian Open.
He is chasing a ninth title at Wimbledon and is scheduled to play the warm-up grass court tournament in Halle beginning on June 14.
Djokovic and Nadal advance
The top-ranked Djokovic continued his journey towards his 19th Grand Slam title with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis in one hour and 32 minutes.
Djokovic will next meet 19-year-old Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

I must say I’ve created a lot of memories alongside Rohitt and several of my teammates,” Ashwin said at the press conference.
“Obviously, there are a lot of people to thank. But, I would be failing in my duty if I didn’t thank the BCCI and the rest of my teammates. I want to name a few of them and all the coaches — Rohit, Virat, Ajinkya, and Pujara who have taken all those catches in the slips to help me get those wickets.”
Ashwin also thanked the Australian cricket team for being fierce competitors over the years.
“Also a big thank you to the Australian cricket team. They have been very fierce competitors. I have enjoyed playing alongside them.
“I won’t be taking any questions, but certainly, it’s a very emotional moment.”

India’s WTC Final Chances Hinge on Brisbane Test as Rain Threatens
India’s WTC Final chances are at risk as rain continues to affect the Brisbane Test against Australia. With the ICC World Test Championship qualification at stake, this match plays a pivotal role in deciding India’s pathway to the final. Rain interruptions have hindered Australia’s push to enforce the follow-on, giving India a potential lifeline.
Australia took an early lead in the match, showcasing dominant performances with both bat and ball. However, persistent rainfall has disrupted their plans to finish the game strongly. For India, the inclement weather has provided a much-needed opportunity to recover and aim for a draw, which is crucial for keeping their WTC hopes alive.
Currently, Australia sits comfortably at the top of the WTC standings (India’s WTC Final chances), while India faces mounting pressure to secure crucial points. Analysts have pointed out that India’s first-innings batting collapse has only made their road to the final tougher. A draw in Brisbane would offer India some relief, but subsequent matches will demand consistent victories to secure a spot in the WTC Final.
As rain continues to impact the game, both teams face uncertainty, with the result holding significant implications for the WTC standings. Fans eagerly await the resolution of this rain-affected clash.
