The 3rd T20 match between India and England was a dead rubber as India had already wrapped up the series 2-1.
The England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to bat.
Interestingly, it was the first time since September 2016 that England had chosen to bat in a T20I.
They had opted to bowl on each of the previous 26 occasions when they won the toss.
India, meanwhile, made four changes again, resting proven names to try out some of their younger players.
India rested Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal, bringing in Shreyas Iyer, Avesh Khan, Umran Malik and Ravi Bishnoi.
England also made two changes in an attempt to avoid a series whitewash against India.
England brought in Phil Salt and Reece Topley in place of Sam Curran and Matt Parkinson.
England made a slow start as Jason Roy and Jos Buttler put on a 31-run partnership for the first wicket.
Avesh Khan gave the first blow to England when he bowled Jos Buttler for 18 runs with the help of two fours and a six.
After this Jason Roy shared a 30-run partnership with David Malan for the second wicket.
Roy was caught off Umran Malik by wicketkeeper Pant for 27 off 26 balls.
A lot was expected of Philippe Salt but he disappointed, getting clean bolwed by Harshal Patel for 8.
That’s when the English innings exploded to life.
A 42-ball 84-run fourth-wicket partnership between Dawid Malan (77) and Liam Livingstone (42*) powered England to 215/7 in 20 overs.
Malan, who batted at a strike rate of 197.43, hit six fours and five sixes at Trent Bridge tonight.
With bowling figures of 4-0-30-2, India spinner Ravi Bishnoi was the pick of their bowlers.
While pacer Harshal Patel also picked a couple of wickets, new-ball bowlers Avesh Khan and Umran Malik picked a wicket apiece.
Chasing a 216-run target, India lost their top-order within the powerplay as Rishabh Pant (1), Virat Kohli (11) and Rohit Sharma (11) failed to provide a start.
However, batter Suryakumar Yadav’s maiden T20I century saved India from embarrassment.
Surya became the fifth batsman from India to score a century in T20.
Before him, Rohit Sharma (four centuries), KL Rahul (two centuries), Suresh Raina (one century) and Deepak Hooda (one century) have scored centuries.
Dinesh Karthik and Ravindra Jadeja could not do much.
Karthik was dismissed for six and Jadeja scored seven.
After this, Surya also lost his wicket and he was dismissed for 117 runs in 55 balls with the help of 14 fours and six sixes.
This is India’s second highest individual score in T20 after Rohit Sharma’s 118.
With the dismissal of Suryakumar, India’s hopes also ended.
Chris Jordan did not allow India to score 21 runs in the last over.
Harshal Patel was dismissed for five runs and Ravi Bishnoi scored two runs.
Avesh Khan remained unbeaten on one run.
David Willey and Chris Jordan got two wickets each. Moeen Ali took a wicket.
England fast bowler Reece Topley, 28, won his maiden T20I Player of the Match award in his 12th T20I.
Opening the bowling with David Willey, Topley picked bowling figures of 4-0-22-3 dismissing Pant, Sharma and Shreyas Iyer (28) in the process.
Despite batting at a strike rate of 212.72, Yadav failed to win his fourth T20I match award.
