Mayank Agarwal, the seasoned cricketer and captain of the Karnataka team, found himself in an unexpected situation when he fell ill just before his scheduled flight to New Delhi. The incident unfolded on Tuesday, January 30, as the cricketer complained of irritation in his mouth after mistakenly consuming a liquid from a pouch on an IndiGo flight, believing it to be water.

Reportedly, Mayank Agarwal has filed an official complaint regarding the incident, as the liquid led to sudden irritation, rendering him unable to talk. The Karnataka captain was subsequently rushed to a hospital in Agartala for medical attention. Kiran Kumar, SP West Tripura, mentioned that Agarwal is now stable with normal vitals, but an investigation has been initiated based on the complaint filed under the NCCPS (New Capital Complex Police Station).

Providing more insights into the incident, Kumar shared that Agarwal’s manager conveyed that the cricketer experienced oral irritation, along with swelling and ulcers in his mouth, after consuming the liquid on the flight. Manoj Kumar Debnath, manager of business development at ILS Hospital, confirmed that Mayank Agarwal, aged 32, is clinically stable and under constant monitoring.

Mayank Agarwal has been vital for Karnataka

Mayank Agarwal, known for his right-handed batting prowess, recently showcased his skills in Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy 2024 match against Tripura, contributing scores of 51 and 17 in their 29-run victory. However, due to the aftermath of the medical emergency, it’s unlikely that Agarwal will participate in the team’s upcoming match against the Railways in Surat. Vice-captain Nikin Jose is expected to lead the team in Agarwal’s absence.

IndiGo, the airline involved in the incident, issued an official statement explaining the situation. The press release stated that flight, 6E 5177, operating from Agartala to Delhi, had to return to its origin due to a medical emergency involving Mayank Agarwal.

The cricketer was off-loaded and promptly taken to the hospital for further medical assistance. The aircraft later resumed its journey to its destination. The incident has raised concerns and prompted an investigation, emphasising the need for caution in handling consumables during air travel.
