South Africa wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock has played his last ODI in the second semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2023. Ahead of the ongoing tournament, he announced that he would retire from the format. The left-hander cited the format as being tiring for his body. Not to forget, the Johannesburg player retired from Test cricket at the age of 29 almost a couple of years back.

In the ongoing tournament, the Lucknow Super Giants player was one of the top run-getters with 594 runs in 10 games. As his team lost the semifinal match against Australia, he will join the bandwagon of his predecessor who never played an ODI World Cup final. The 30-year-old finished his ODI career with 6770 runs in 155 games averaging 45.74 including 21 hundreds. Meanwhile, let’s have a look at De Kock’s milestones.

Quinton de Kock’s milestones in ODI cricket

  1. First South African to get past 500 runs in ODI World Cup

The wicketkeeper batter is the first South African to get past 500 runs in an ODI World Cup. Previously, all-rounder Jacques Kallis amassed 485 runs in the 2007 World Cup. Notably, in that tournament, the Proteas lost to Australia in the semis. Apart from this, former skipper AB de Villiers got three runs less in the 2015 edition.

2. Joint-most centuries for South Africa in the World Cup

De Kock hit four hundreds in the ongoing tournament. The same was done by De Villiers eight years back. However, only Rohit Sharma has more hundreds (five in 2019)

3. Fourth player to score 1000-plus runs in his ODI World Cup career

De Kock is the fourth player to get 1000-plus runs in ODI World Cup career. AB de Villiers has the most runs (1207), followed by Jacques Kallis (1148), Herschelle Gibbs (1067), and De Kock (1044).

4. Joint most hundreds in ODI World Cup

The former Sunrisers Hyderabad player in the IPL has 21 hundreds, equalling Gibbs. Ahead of them, Hashim Amla (27) has the most centuries, followed by AB de Villiers (25). Apart from this, de Kock has second most centuries (21), only behind Kumar Sangakkara (23) in ODI World Cups.

5. Third highest score by South African

Former India and South Africa head coach Gary Kirsten hit 188 against the UAE in the 1996 WC. Six years back, former skipper Faf du Plessis hit 185 against Sri Lanka. In 2016, De Kock hit 178 against Australia.

His inability to accelerate scoring when required drew ire from fans and analysts alike, with many questioning his intent and decision-making under pressure.

While Rizwan’s cautious approach ensured some stability, it proved inadequate against South Africa’s aggressive game plan. His inability to shift gears in critical moments ultimately hurt Pakistan’s chances, and his performance sparked a broader debate about his role and strategy in the team’s batting order. Some commentators were particularly scathing, questioning how Rizwan could reflect on his effort given the circumstances.

The incident has added to the scrutiny of Pakistan’s overall performance in the tournament, with many demanding better strategies and execution from key players.
