Mahela Jayawardene breaks silence on controversy around Mumbai Indians captaincy

For the past few days, Mumbai Indians have been facing criticism after Rohit Sharma was removed as the captain. Hardik Pandya was named the new Captain for the upcoming season of IPL 2024. The move did not sit down well with the fans of the franchise. There has been massive outrage on social media with Mumbai Indians losing lots of followers. The fans also posted videos and pictures of the teams’ kits being burnt.

Rohit Sharma took the reins of the team from Ricky Ponting and led the side with great distinction. Five IPL titles and 1 Champions League T20 were added to trophy cabinet of the men in blue and gold.

Mahela Jayawardene opens up on Rohit Sharma controversy –

Former Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene spoke on the Rohit Sharma controversy on Tuesday. Mumbai Indians’ head of performance was speaking to Jio Cinema on the sidelines of the IPL 2024 Auctions.

The 48-year-old said “Absolutely, it’s fair on the fans as well, everyone is emotional. We have to respect that. At the same time, as a franchise, we had to make those decisions. And having Rohit in the team to guide the next generation is very important. I think he has been absolutely brilliant. I have worked closely with Rohit, he is a fabulous individual, a fabulous leader”

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians owner Akash Ambani was also called out by a fan in attendance. The fan in question was heard shouting “Rohit Sharma ko wapas lao” to which Akash Ambani said “Chinta Mat Karo woh batting karega”.

Earlier in the day, Mumbai Indians put to rest rumours of Rohit Sharma or any other player leaving the team. While speaking to CRICBUZZ a source from the team said “Rohit isn’t going anywhere, nor will any player. The news reports are totally fake and false. No MI player will be leaving us, nor will be traded by us”

The source further said “Every player was taken into confidence before the decision was made. Rohit too was informed, and he is very much part of the decision-making process,”

It was reported that Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals were the two interested parties for Rohit Sharma. One of the teams’ said “We would have given anything for Rohit, but we no longer are in the race”
