‘Itna chota sa target bhi chase nahin hua’ – Fans upset as India Women lose first ODI against Bangladesh in low-scoring affair
In the first ODI in Mirpur, Bangladesh and India locked horns. The visitors, India were coming off a 2-1 series win against the same opponents a few days back. Notably, the Indian batting during the series was awful as they had to defend 92 runs in the second T20I. Meanwhile, in the first ODI, the Women In Blue won the toss and elected to bowl first.
The Green Brigade opener, Sharmin Akhtar bagged an 18-ball duck. In fact, not many of the Bangladesh batters got going as the game with the game was impacted by rain. The wicket wasn’t helping the willow wielders’ cause either. For India, Amanjyot Kaur made her debut and took a four-for in. Devika Vaidya, the left-arm wrist spinner took two and Deepti Sharma took one.
The home team was bowled out for 152 runs in 43 overs with one over to go. No player scored a fifty and the highest scorer for the team was skipper Nigar Sultana (39).
India failed to chase down a meager target
In reply, the visitors had a poor start as they lost five wickets for 61 runs. Priya Punia (10), who replaced Shafali Varma, failed to make an impact. On the other hand, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana (11), skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (5), and Jemimah Rodrigues (10) were a big letdown.
At this stage, the likes of all-rounder Deepti Sharma and debutant, Amanjyot put together 30 runs for the sixth wicket. Things were going well before the likes of Marufa Akhter and Rabeya Khan combined for a team hat-trick. This marked the end of India’s hopes as they needed quite a lot of runs with only two wickets left.
In the end, India was bowled out for 113 runs, losing the game by 40 runs via DLS method.
This is how Twitter reacted
No Shafali Verma in the Indian team today
1st time she has been dropped since the ODI WC last year
Priya Punia & Jemimah Rodrigues return to the playing XI for the 1st time since 2021

That's the pitch they make to win. Bangladesh won by 4-1 against Aussies in 2021. Also 2-1 vs India in 2022.#BANvIND pic.twitter.com/yniptXcnnV

Will we even make the knockouts in Bangladesh next year? #BANvIND

This might have been the longest batting line up for India women. No:1 to 11 are recognised batters esp for their domestic teams. Still unable to chase the target of 153. #BANvIND

As a friend rightly pointed out, Anusha Bareddy was not even among India A's 5 1st choice spinners in the Emerging Teams Cup last month
Now she's suddenly in the Indian T20I & ODI playing XIs
Feel for her because she's clearly not ready for international cricket yet#BANvIND

Jasprit Bumrah’s Champions Trophy Participation Remains Uncertain
India’s selectors face a tough challenge while finalizing the squad for the Champions Trophy, as Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness remains uncertain.
Bumrah’s Injury Updates
Bumrah suffered back spasms during the Sydney Test in the Border-Gavaskar series. Consequently, he was taken to the hospital for scans.
Although the BCCI has not disclosed the severity of his injury, Bumrah consulted New Zealand-based surgeon Dr. Rowan Schouten for guidance.
Meanwhile, reports suggest the surgeon is coordinating with the BCCI’s medical team. Therefore, selectors are awaiting updates on Bumrah’s condition.
Will Bumrah Be Included?
While Bumrah might be named in India’s provisional squad, which is due to the ICC by January 12, his participation depends on medical clearance.
Moreover, Bumrah will be rested for the England home series starting January 22, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs.
After that, India’s team will travel to Dubai for the Champions Trophy, where Bumrah’s availability could be crucial for the team’s performance.
