‘Ash anna ka kaam hai records crash karna’ – Fans react as R Ashwin breaks multiple records with his 12-wicket haul in 1st Test against WI
India won the first Test against the West Indies in Dominica by an innings and 141 runs, kicking off their WTC 2023–25 campaign in impressive fashion. India declared with a sizable 421/5, giving them a 271-run advantage, then on Friday (July 14), they bowled the West Indies out for 130 in their second innings to finish the match in three days. Additionally, India’s victory was their biggest by an innings margin in a Test match played outside of Asia.
Yashasvi Jaiswal may have won the Player of the Match award for his magnificent century but the no. 1 ranked Test bowler in the world Ravichandran Ashwin also produced a heroic performance as he picked up 12 wickets in the match which included fifers in each of the 2 innings. The veteran off-spinner also registered his name in multiple records.
Ashwin has now taken fifers in each inning of a Test match 6 times and is just behind Muttiah Muralitharan (11 times), Rangana Herath (8 times) and Sydney Barnes (6 times). He also entered into the list of most wickets taken against West Indies in Tests. Ashwin has taken 72 wickets against the Caribbean side in Tests and grabbed the no. 4 position in the list.
Ashwin’s remarkable comeback after getting dropped in WTC 2023
Apart from this, he also equalled the record of former legendary West Indies’ bowler Malcolm Marshall’s record for the most no. of fifers in India vs West Indies Test match as he took his 6th five-wicket haul against West Indies in the 2nd innings of the first Test match. Here, Ashwin has equalled the astounding stats of Anil Kumble. Kumble and Ashwin both have eight 10-wicket hauls for India in Test matches, with Harbhajan Singh coming in second with five.
It won’t be wrong to say that this is Ashwin’s greatest comeback in Tests after getting dropped from the Indian squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final match against Australia in June. Ashwin has always proved his importance in the team and with this performance, it is clear that he definitely deserved a place in the WTC 2023 final squad.
