Australia won the Boxing Day Test at MCG against Pakistan by 79 runs. The home side was given a run for the money on the fourth day by the visiting side. But Australia was able to clinch the match by the end of the last session of the fourth day to claim an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series with a game to go. It was a good win for the home side.

Australia started the match on a good note. The batters were good enough to give them a fine start. Pakistan’s bowlers were good but conceded a lot of runs through extras. A whopping 52 extras were conceded by the visiting side in the first innings. Australia scored 318 runs in the first innings. Pakistan was doing good at one stage in the first innings.

What followed was a nightmarish collapse from the middle order. As a result, Pakistan ended up conceding a lead of 54 runs. Australia in their second innings found themselves in huge trouble. The home side was reduced to 16/4 in quick time by Pakistani pacers who threatened to make a comeback in the game. Since then, the Test match was almost in a balance.

Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith played fantastic knocks for Australia and revived the second innings with the bat. The two batters played in their way but ensured that Australia was able to score enough in the second innings. Pakistan was given a target of 318 runs to chase at MCG, which was a lot on a wicket that was doing a bit for the pacers.

Pakistan was in the chase for the most part on the 4th day. The batters of Pakistan tried their best to win the match. But a brilliant spell of bowling from Pat Cummins ensured that his side won the match by 79 runs. The Australian captain won the Player of the Match award for claiming twin fifers in the Test match. Even with his leadership, Cummins shined and got the Mullagh Medal.
