Former legendary Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh lashed out at India’s number 4 ODI batter, Shreyas Iyer, for his embarrassing performance in India’s first match of the  ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 which is being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai against Australia.

Yuvraj expressed his dissatisfaction with Iyer’s innings on a social media platform and emphasized the importance of the number 4 batter being able to handle pressure. He believes that Iyer needs to exhibit better decision-making skills when it comes to rebuilding the innings. The right-handed batter was dismissed without scoring any runs in his debut ODI World Cup match. With that said, Yuvraj also mentioned that KL Rahul should replace Iyer at no. 4.

“No 4 batsman has to absorb the pressure!! Need better thinking from @ShreyasIyer15 when the team is trying to rebuild their innings! Still don’t understand why @klrahul is not batting at no 4 ! After scoring a 100 against Pakistan! Dropping @imVkohli might cost Australia big time, don’t drop the king because he can take the game away. Game on !!,” Yuvraj posted on ‘X’.

During the match, Iyer was dismissed for a duck by Josh Hazlewood in the second over after playing a loose shot at a wide-length delivery, which was easily caught by David Warner at covers. This early dismissal left India in a precarious position at 2 runs for 3 wickets after just 2 overs in the 2nd innings.

Iyer came to bat after India lost both their opening batters, Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma, in the initial 10 balls of the innings. Kishan attempted a shot at a full-length delivery from Starc, resulting in an edge that was caught by Cameron Green in the slip cordon. This marked a disappointing World Cup debut for Kishan as well, who had been brought into the side as a replacement for the unwell Shubman Gill.

Indian skipper Rohit also departed without contributing any runs to the scoreboard, falling for a duck. However, later, former Indian captain Virat Kohli and KL Rahul steadied the ship and stitched a century partnership to make India’s chase easy.
