India found themselves in a precarious position while chasing a small target of 200 runs set by Australia in the 5th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, October 8. The powerplay overs proved to be a battleground as India lost three crucial wickets for just 2 runs within the first two overs.

Australian speedsters Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood displayed a lethal fast bowling display, exploiting early wicket-taking opportunities. Starc dismissed Ishan Kishan in the first over. Kishan was making his ODI World Cup debut and departed after an embarrassing golden duck. He was followed by the Indian captain Rohit Sharma who also departed without scoring anything by Hazlewood in the 2nd over.

Indian fans were still trying to recover from the early wickets but Shreyas also got out on the same over while trying to hit a boundary. He also departed without scoring any runs. It was quite embarrassing for the Indian fans as all the 3 Indian batters were sent back to the pavilion on ducks.

However, now, the middle order will need to regroup, rebuild, and launch a counterattack if they hope to reach the target and secure victory. The match promises to be an intense and nerve-wracking contest, with both teams locked in fierce competition.

Brilliant bowling display by India

Earlier, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. They lost Mitchell Marsh early but David Warner and Steve Smith handled things sensibly and stitched a 69-run stand for the 2nd wicket. Smith was looking great but Warner’s wicket brought the much-needed breakthrough for India and then the spinners took over.

Ravindra Jadeja bowled a beauty to get Smith and the wheels came off for Australia after that. From 110/2, they slipped to 140/7. It looked like the Kangaroos would be bundled out under 160,= but the lower order displayed some mighty blows to push the score to 199.
