Former England left-arm spinner Monty Panesar has praised India opening batter, Shubman Gill. The latter has been a prolific run-scorer across formats for India. Gill replaced Shikhar Dhawan in the ODI format and had made his place in the Test side much before. In the T20I cricket, the right-hander replaced KL Rahul. Gill has often been compared with former India skipper and his teammate, Virat Kohli.

Meanwhile, Panesar has said that Gill can simplify the game with the way he bats. The former left-arm spinner added that Gill has fewer trigger movements.

“I think he’s the type of cricketer who finds it easy to simplify his game. You can see it in the way he bats. He has a few trigger movements. And then he just places the ball everywhere because he trusts his hand, his balance and his footwork,” Panesar told PTI.

Shubman Gill is more of Rohit Sharma than Virat Kohli: Panesar

The former England player further added that Gill is more like Rohit Sharma than Kohli. However, Panesar also mentioned that it will all depend on how he handles the pressure in the coming weeks.

“He’s more of Rohit Sharma than Virat Kohli. But it will all depend on how he responds to the pressure over the next seven weeks or so,” he added.

Meanwhile, the 2018 U19 winner has been ruled out of the ongoing game against Australia. He was reported to have sustained Dengue and is yet to recover as confirmed by Sharma at the toss.

“Unfortunately, Shubman didn’t recover in time. Ishan will replace him.”

Notably, as reported by ESPNcricinfo an hour ago, the Punjab player didn’t arrive with the team at the venue. It was clear since then that he would not play this game. He has been replaced by Ishan Kishan.
