Lionel Messi has been given yet another award by the Football fraternity. The star player has been named the best player of the year for 2023 by the international Football body. Considering the performances of the Argentine at the highest level of the game and for helping Inter Miami to script history in the MLS, the international Football body named Messi the player of the year.

Messi has been in terrific form as a player. In the Football World Cup 2022, the 36-year-old helped Argentina to win their third Football World Cup, for the first time since 1986, where Diego Maradona had helped them to win for the second time. The performances of Messi have been acknowledged by the Football fraternity in recent times, as he won many awards for the same.

The biggest of them all was the ultimate Ballon d’Or award for the year 2023 where he was declared the winner due to the performances for Argentina in the World Cup 2022 and Inter Miami in the MLS. Messi won the golden ball in the Football World Cup 2022 and led Argentina as a captain. Likewise, Messi helped Inter Miami to win the MLS for the first time in a long time.

Legitimacy of the award

While many are praising Messi for winning the award, some others are questioning the legitimacy of it. The argument is that the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland deserved it more. It can be a case considering how they have also performed in the season. In particular, the latter has been in a serious form where he has been scoring goals for fun for Manchester City.

Under the style of Pep Guardiola, Manchester City achieved the treble. Haaland was the hero in the season for the English franchise who won everything to be won in front of them.
