India convincingly defeated the defending champions England by a margin of 100 runs in the 29th ODI World Cup 2023 match held at the packed Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, October 29. England’s poor performance, with just one win in six matches, places them at the bottom of the tournament’s points table, making their chances of progressing appear bleak.

Meanwhile, during the 2nd innings of the match, a video featuring India‘s captain, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli celebrating exuberantly when an English batter was dismissed went viral on social media. Fans have described it as a “beautiful moment.” This memorable incident occurred after Mohammed Shami’s first delivery in his second spell removed Moeen Ali, caught behind. During the celebration, Kohli was seen lifting and hugging Rohit in a moment of joy.

Talking about the match, the hosts were asked to bat and they lost three of their top four batters for single-digit scores. Captain Rohit Sharma adapted to the conditions and top-scored with a classy 87 and forged a crucial 91-run stand with KL Rahul. Suryakumar Yadav’s 49 and the 21-run stand for the ninth wicket between Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav took India’s total to 229.

Brilliant bowling display by Indian bowlers

England appeared to have the upper hand due to the influence of dew and scoring 30 runs in the initial 27 balls. However, a remarkable turn of events followed as Bumrah consistently bowled in challenging areas, securing early breakthroughs with consecutive wickets.

Dawid Malan made a mistake and got bowled out, while Joe Root was dismissed with a golden duck, falling leg-before-wicket. Mohammed Shami‘s skilful seam movement made him nearly unplayable. Ben Stokes attempted to power his way out of the situation but found no success, departing without scoring, and Jonny Bairstow quickly followed suit. The Bumrah-Shami pace duo exhibited top-quality bowling as they picked up 7 wickets together, leaving England struggling to recover, and they were ultimately dismissed for a mere 129 runs.
