India defeated England in a low-scoring 29th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, October 29. Despite putting up just 229 runs on the scoreboard. The Men in Blue managed to register a  -run victory over the defending champions. India are now the table toppers with 6 out of 6 wins while the English side are still at the bottom with only 1 win in 6 matches.

Talking about the match, England won the toss and chose to field, putting India in the unfamiliar position of setting a target. England’s decision paid off early, as they dismissed Shubman Gill (9), Virat Kohli (0), and Shreyas Iyer (4) with just 40 runs on the board.  At 40/3, the hosts had their backs against the wall. That’s when the Indian captain and his former opening partner KL Rahul joined hands to steady the ship.

Both steadied the ship with a 91-run partnership for the 4th wicket. Rohit notched up his second half-century of the tournament. Just when India seemed to be regaining control, Rahul played a loose shot and departed for 39 runs. Rohit was closing in on his second century, but his attempt to accelerate the innings led to his downfall while trying to hit a six off Rashid’s delivery.

Suryakumar Yadav played a valuable innings of 49 runs off 47 balls, including 4 fours and 1 six, but fell just short of his first World Cup half-century. India finished their innings with a total of 229 runs in their allotted 50 overs. David Willey picked up 3 wickets for his side while Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid picked up 2 wickets each.

Magnificent bowling performance by India

Chasing the target, England’s chase got off to a solid start, but it was Jasprit Bumrah who became the game-changer. At the end of his third over, Bumrah delivered a double blow, dismissing Dawid Malan and Joe Root off consecutive balls. Mohammed Shami also joined the party by removing the dangerous duo of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow in his first two overs.

And then the spin maestro, Kuldeep Yadav, showed his brilliant bowling skills by dismissing the English skipper Jos Buttler with a beautiful delivery. However, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone tried to steady the ship but once again, Shami came and struck. He dismissed Moeen in the 24th over. Livingstone’s struggling innings also came to an end in the 30th over. Just as Shami and Bumrah started the innings with wickets, they ended it with the same by taking the final two wickets. Shami picked up 4 wickets while Bumrah took 3.
