Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and opted to bat, although the pitch appeared favourable for batting, it was slightly slower compared to the previous match. After Jasprit Bumrah dismissed the dynamic Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz made an effort to maintain the scoring rate but was soon dismissed, leaving Afghanistan at 63/3.
Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai then combined for a 121-run partnership to stabilize their innings. However, during the latter part of their batting, the Indian bowlers managed to take wickets consistently, with Jasprit Bumrah playing a pivotal role by taking four wickets in short spells. Other than Shahidi and Omarzai, no other Afghan batters could spend significant time at the crease, and as a result, Afghanistan managed to reach a total of 272 runs, but with difficulty.
Brilliant batting performance by India
Chasing the target, Rohit Sharma came out with an aggressive approach and dominated the Afghan bowlers, consistently finding the boundary. In just 10 overs, India had raced to 94/0, while Ishan Kishan struggled to score runs initially. Eventually, Kishan found his rhythm, and the opening pair accumulated a formidable 156-run partnership before Kishan was dismissed.
Rohit continued his remarkable performance, scoring the fastest century by an Indian in World Cup history and achieving several significant milestones before being dismissed for 131. Although Rohit couldn’t see the game through to the end, an in-form Virat Kohli notched up another half-century, and with the help of Shreyas Iyer, they comfortably finished the match with 15 overs to spare.
