New Zealand and Afghanistan are clashing against each other in the 16th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, October 18. The Kiwis have won their first 3 matches of the tournament while Afghanistan have won only 1 match from the 3 matches they’ve played so far.

Meanwhile, during the first innings of the match, Afghanistan star spinner Rashid Khan was spotted fuming at Mujeeb Ur Rahman. New Zealand skipper Tom Latham played a reverse-sweep shot to Rashid in the 41st over which went straight to Mujeeb. The catch looked quite easy but Mujeeb was too casual while taking the catch as he tried to grab it with only one hand and ended up dropping it. Rashid was left furious after seeing the poor display of Mujeeb.

Interestingly, this was not the only catch which was dropped by Afghanistan, they dropped 4 to 5 catches in the entire innings and the wicketkeeper Ikram Alikhil also missed a stumping opportunity. The poor fielding display from the Afghanistan fielders helped the Blackcaps to put up a respectable total of 288 runs on the scoreboard.

Poor fielding display by Afghanistan

Talking about the match, Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bowl first. Their bowlers did their job, starting with Mujeeb who got the opener Devon Conway out fairly early. Will Young soldiered on for a while to get a fifty, while Rachin Ravindra looked a bit sketchy in his knock as New Zealand found scoring tough. Then came a brilliant spell from Azmatullah Omarzai as he sent back both set batters and Rashid also priced out Daryl Mitchell early leaving the Kiwis in trouble.

The Afghan spinners were disciplined with their bowling, but the fielders let them down as they set Glenn Phillips and Tom Latham to consolidate a partnership. Both also smashed their half-centuries and took the team out of trouble. Rashid himself could have had four wickets but ended with just one, as New Zealand found an ideal launch pad to attack at the death. Naveen-ul-Haq claimed the wickets of both set batters in one over late on, but Mark Chapman came in and swung freely. His late cameo has helped New Zealand to finish with 288.
