New Zealand talisman Kane Williamson got run out in a terrible collision with his teammate Will Young on Day 2 of the first Test against Australia. Attempting to open his account with a quick single, the duo collided at mid-pitch, resulting in Williamson’s first run-out in Test cricket in 12 years. The former Kiwi skipper has been in tremendous form and this bizarre dismissal has left his team in dire straits.

The incident happened in the fifth over bowled by Mitchell Starc. Opener Tom Latham’s lbw dismissal in the second last ball of the fifth over brought Williamson to the crease. On the final delivery of the over, the veteran right-hander hit the ball towards mid-off and called for a risky single. His partner at the other end, Young, was late to respond and ran in the wrong direction, resulting in a collision.

Marnes Labuschagne quickly collected the ball and he struck a direct hit before Williamson reached the crease at the non-striker’s end. The star batter was in disbelief as his aim to give a positive start for the team was thwarted. The commentary team, led by SEN Cricket commentator Daniel McHardy, also expressed shock at the developments.

Soon after Williamson’s unfortunate dismissal, young sensation Rachin Ravindra was also dismissed by Josh Hazlewood for a three-ball duck. Darryl Mitchell and Young tried to form a partnership, but their 20-over+ stay at the crease didn’t put many runs on the board. The duo was removed in quick succession, but thanks to Tom Blundell’s (33 off 43 balls) and Glenn Phillips’ (71 off 70 balls) fightback, New Zealand got out of serious embarrassment.

Matt Henry, who shone with a fifer in Australia’s batting innings, played an effective cameo (42 off 34 balls) to take the team score to 179/10. Off-spinner Nathan Lyon grabbed four wickets, while Hazlewood took two. Earlier, on the back of Cameron Green’s brilliant 275-ball 174, Australia managed to score 383 runs.
