Sri Lanka close out Day 1 at 242/6

Earlier, Sri Lanka chose to bat first after winning the toss. Despite having a difficult start to a day interrupted by rain, Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi, who today took his 100th Test wicket, wreaked havoc on the Lankan batting order and sent three of them back to the pavilion for only 63 runs.

However, Sri Lanka made a comeback in the second session thanks to vital fifties from Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva. In the second session, Pakistan struggled to take wickets, but Mathews and Dhananjaya put together a century partnership for the fifth wicket, scoring 131 runs in 198 balls.

But just as tea was about to be served, spinner Abrar Ahmed struck after Mathews edged a ball to wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed. A nine-boundary innings let him score 64 runs. Following this, de Silva finished on the verge of a deserved century as he bats at 94* off 157 balls at stumps on Day 1. His knock includes 10 fours and three sixes. Sadeera Samarawickrama (36 off 57) was the last man to be dismissed as stumps were called after 65.4 overs. Sri Lanka are currently at 242/6. For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi’s 3/63 aside, Naseem Shah, Abrar Ahmed, and Ali Agha Khan have all scalped a wicket each.
