Maxwell was literally playing with the bowlers as he reverse-swept sixes left the spectators on the edge of their seats, and the Netherlands bowlers were left bewildered, unsure of where to deliver the ball. Maxwell delivered a blockbuster performance that thoroughly delighted the fans in the nation’s capital.
Brilliant batting performance by Maxwell in death overs
The slog overs were dominated by Maxwell, single-handedly amassing 131 runs in the last 10 overs, propelling Australia to a colossal total of 399/8 in 50 overs. He stepped onto the field in the 40th over, following the dismissal of wicketkeeper Josh Inglish by Bas de Leede. The Netherlands could not have foreseen the nightmare that awaited them in the coming overs.
Maxwell wasted no time settling in, striking boundaries off the third and fourth deliveries he faced, and from there, there was no stopping him. The flamboyant all-rounder took the Dutch bowlers to the cleaners. His half-century was achieved with a six executed with a reverse sweep off Bas de Leede‘s delivery, a shot only Maxwell could execute in that manner against a pacer.
He didn’t halt there, connecting with the next short ball once more for another reverse sweep, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Maxwell reached his first 50-plus score in the last 16 innings in style and went on to make it even more significant. With two overs remaining and Maxwell at 75, the record for the fastest ODI century was within his grasp. The 35-year-old took the matter seriously and reached the milestone in the very next over and also helped the team to achieve a massive total of 399 runs.
