Renowned filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia in an interview on Red Mike’s YouTube channel spoke about the state of Bollywood. He said that there has been a rise in politically motivated and agenda-driven movies in India.

He calls these films ‘artistically lacking and aesthetically bankrupt’ as they sacrifice the artistic integrity of the filmmakers today.

Talking about them, he called these types of films terrible that people do not even watch. “Sirf wahi chali thi, kya naam tha uska, Kashmir Files. Main inki baat hi nahi karta, bekaar picturein hain sab. (Only Kashmir Files was popular. I don’t even talk about these films, they’re all terrible),” he said.

“They’re badly made films”

While Dhulia acknowledged the impact of these films despite their nature but says Indian propaganda films ‘fail to achieve the same level of artistic merit due’. Most of the directors making politically motivated films lack the artistic skills to make good films.

He further questions the main intention behind making these types of films and speculates it is mostly to earn money. Such was the case for The Kashmir Files, which earned over 300 crore despite huge backlash.

“We see directors using their political ideologies as propaganda in their cinema. This is a wide-ranging topic. In India, the sort of films that are being made to promote the kind of politics that we see around us, are aesthetically terrible,” Dhulia further added.

In the meantime, there are more similar films lined up for release, including Kangana Ranaut‘s Emergency and Vikrant Massey‘s The Sabarmati Report. While many like to watch this kind of film, others simply want light entertainment.

Bollywood fans have long admired stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. However, many filmmakers struggle to bring out the full potential of these superstars. In an exclusive discussion with Pinkvilla, YouTuber and film critic Anmol Jamwal, along with marketing director Varun Gupta, highlighted this issue.

They noted that South Indian filmmakers, like Atlee and AR Murugadoss, consistently bring out the best in actors. Atlee’s work with Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan and Murugadoss’ handling of Aamir Khan in Ghajini were key examples. Both directors showcased their stars in new ways, leading to blockbuster successes.

Himesh Mankad, a trade analyst, explained that trust between the actor and director is essential. He mentioned that when actors feel safe with directors, they perform better. He gave an example of Salman Khan’s suggestions during filming. Mankad said it’s up to the director to pick the right ideas and reject the wrong ones.

Anmol Jamwal questioned if Bollywood stars are willing to adapt. He pointed to Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan and noted that many films lack strong scripts. He asked if directors like Atlee could bring precision and elevate the material.

Varun Gupta spoke about how directors need to earn an actor’s trust. He pointed out that Ranveer Singh trusts Aditya Dhar because Dhar has proven himself in his genre. Gupta noted that in the South, filmmakers work hard to ensure both the stars and stories succeed.

The trio agreed that the audience plays a key role. Varun explained that watching films in South India is a part of everyday life. In contrast, Bollywood needs to work harder to earn the audience’s trust after disappointing films. The experts concluded that films like Jawan and Kabir Singh prove that great results come when the director and actor trust each other.

The casting process for Spider-Man: Homecoming brought unexpected challenges for Laura Harrier, who played Liz Toomes. Harrier recently revealed that she initially believed Zendaya had taken her role after her screen test. Speaking with Net-a-Porter, Harrier shared, “After my screen test, reports surfaced that Zendaya was cast in the movie. I thought I’d lost the role. My agent reassured me I was still in the running, but it was a nerve-wracking moment.”

Zendaya, already a Disney star with a massive fan following, was widely speculated to be playing Mary Jane Watson. Instead, she portrayed MJ, while Harrier took on the role of Liz Toomes, bringing a fresh dynamic to the franchise.

Marvel Studios’ casting of two women of color in key roles was groundbreaking. Harrier praised the studio’s approach: “It wasn’t about our blackness; it was about reflecting the diversity of New York City. That’s what films should do. Zendaya and I had so much fun making the movie, and we’ve remained friends since.”

While Harrier did not return for Spider-Man: Far From Home, she cherishes the relationships formed during her Marvel journey. “Friendships with people like Zendaya, Yara Shahidi, and Alycia Debnam-Carey make this sometimes-strange industry less intimidating and much more rewarding,” Harrier shared.

More than seven years since Spider-Man: Homecoming, Harrier has built a strong career, starring in projects like Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood. Meanwhile, Zendaya has achieved critical acclaim with roles in Dune and Euphoria.

Their shared experience on Spider-Man symbolizes Marvel’s commitment to diversity and highlights the importance of camaraderie in the entertainment world.
