Despite securing back-to-back victories in 10 matches, including the semi-final, of the ODI World Cup 2023, India faced a heartbreaking defeat in the crucial final against Australia by 6 wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19. The loss was particularly disheartening for Indian cricket fans.

Meanwhile, on social media, fans have voiced their discontent, pointing out what they perceive as a ‘lack of support’ from the crowd in Ahmedabad. According to their observations, the audience remained silent and failed to rally behind the Indian players when they needed the most encouragement. Even Australian captain Pat Cummins mentioned after winning the match that the crowd was silent.

“It was awesome, I was pretty happy that they (crowd) were silent for a lot of the bowling innings. A couple of times, they got loud and it was really loud. But fantastic, the passion in India is unrivalled around the world.” Cummins said in the post-match presentation.

20-30 runs more would have been good: Rohit Sharma

Talking about the match, India set the initial target with a modest score of 240 in the crucial match, batting first. Although Australia faced a shaky start, the stellar performance of Travis Head and the reliable Marnus Labuschagne ensured that the Aussies reached the target without much suspense. Consequently, Australia claimed their sixth ODI World Cup trophy, leaving Indian fans understandably disappointed.

Australia displayed full commitment on the field, whether it was making full-length dives to save runs, bowling precisely in the right areas, or fearlessly confronting the challenge of batting in front of a massive crowd of 1.3 lakh Indians. Even Indian skipper Rohit Sharma believed that they were 20-30 runs short as the Australian fielders were brilliant, while batting, it was Head and Labuschagne who took the game away from the Indian team.

“The result has not gone our way. We were not good enough today. We tried everything but it wasn’t supposed to be. 20-30 runs more would have been good, KL and Kohli were stitching a good partnership and we were looking at 270-280 but we kept losing wickets. When you have 240 on the board, you want to take wickets but credit to Head and Labuschagne who stitched together a big partnership and put us completely out of the game.” Rohit said after the match.
