After Ishan Kishan decided to withdraw from the South Africa tour, everyone was shocked by his sudden departure. The 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batter didn’t reveal his issue and cited personal reasons. However, recent media reports have revealed the reason behind his decision.

According to reports, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has decided due to “mental fatigue.” The 24-year-old cricketer has been on a relentless journey with the Indian team for the past year. According to reports, he approached the team management during the ongoing South Africa tour, expressing the need for a break to address his mental well-being.

Kishan’s request was met with understanding and support from the team management, who subsequently consulted with the selectors. The consensus among those involved was that Kishan’s mental health should take precedence, highlighting the growing acknowledgement of the importance of mental well-being in professional sports.

However, the Indian Cricket Board released a press statement attributing Kishan’s withdrawal to ‘personal reasons.’ In response to his decision, the Men’s Selection Committee has named Mr. KS Bharat as the replacement wicketkeeper for the upcoming Test series against South Africa.

Ishan Kishan takes a break from all forms of cricket

Having been a crucial part of the Indian squad since January 3, 2023, Kishan has been on a gruelling schedule. He has been a key member of the team during series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia, as well as the 50-over World Cup.

Further in 2023, he has been participating in too much competitive cricket, including a full IPL season with the Mumbai Indians. He also participated in the World Test Championship final in England and a comprehensive West Indies tour. All these matches have taken a toll on Kishan’s mental and physical well-being. His commitment extended to the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and a three-ODI series against Australia, adding further strain.

Despite delivering impactful performances, Kishan found himself on the bench during the ongoing South African tour. Acknowledging the potential limited playing opportunities and recognising the impact on his overall health, Kishan has made a courageous decision to take a temporary break from international cricket. This move underscores the increasing awareness and significance placed on mental health in the competitive world of professional sports.
