Netflix to release documentary on one of greatest sporting rivalries – India vs Pakistan

Sports biopic or documentaries are a guaranteed success among Indian audiences. Taking the biopic of former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story) as an example, there have been several sports-related works in the Indian movie industry, all of which have grabbed huge collections. There are some reasons why cricket is considered a religion in India and filmmakers are working on such projects.

If so, how about watching one of the greatest sporting rivalries – India vs Pakistan on screens? Sure to be a blockbuster hit, right? Get ready to relive the epic cricketing saga between the arch-rivals on your TV/mobile screens. Popular streaming media company Netflix has announced an upcoming documentary series on the cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan, titled “The Greatest Rivalry”.

The OTT platform has released a first-look announcement video that will get cricket fans all over the world excited. The short clip features some iconic moments over the years between the two neighbouring countries. Glimpses of legendary captains Kapil Dev and Imran Khan holding their respective World Cup trophies, and the inclusion of 1947 border imagery ensure a deep historical depiction.

Although the exact release date of the docu-series has not been revealed, the OTT platform is expected to release it soon as the two cricketing powerhouses gear up for another cracking tournament – ​​the 2024 T20 World Cup. Due to geo-political tensions between the two nations, they meet only in major multi-national events like the Asia Cup and the World Cup. They last played in a bilateral series in 2012-2013.

2024 T20 World Cup set to add another chapter in IND vs PAK rivalry 

Another chapter of their rivalry will be written in the upcoming T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by the USA and West Indies in June. Both sides have competed in the premier 20-over tournament seven times, – twice in 2007 (including the Final), 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021, and 2022 and the Men in Blue have emerged victorious on six occasions.

India’s winning streak was broken in the 2021 WC when Babar Azam and Co. registered a massive 10-wicket win. Their last encounter at the marquee event was at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium in October 2022, and India got revenge with a thrilling last-ball victory. Virat Kohli’s magical 82* singlehandedly gave India a miraculous win. This epic clash is also expected to feature in Netflix’s new documentary.
