The retirement of MS Dhoni’s iconic No. 7 jersey by the Indian Cricket Board ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has stirred a wave of emotions among cricket fans worldwide. This symbolic gesture pays tribute to the legendary cricketer’s illustrious career and his significant impact on the sport.

MS Dhoni, often referred to as “Captain Cool,” left an indelible mark on Indian cricket with his exceptional leadership skills. Under his captaincy, India achieved unprecedented success, winning the 2007 T20 World Cup, the pinnacle of all cricket tournaments, the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

The current and the upcoming cricketers have been told about the move. They will not be able to pick MS Dhoni’s number 7 jersey. The Indian Cricket Board has retired Dhoni’s jersey number, keeping in mind his contributions to Indian cricket. The No.10 is already unavailable,” an Indian Cricket Board official was quoted as saying by Crictoday.

“Around 60 numbers are designated to the regular Indian players. Even if a player is off the team for a year, his number is not given to anyone else. The debutants have 30 numbers to choose from,” the official added.

MS Dhoni set to play probably his last IPL season in 2024

Renowned for his lightning-fast stumping, Dhoni redefined wicketkeeping in limited-overs cricket. His helicopter shot became synonymous with innovative batting techniques. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter will be back in action in the upcoming 17th edition of IPL and will be seen leading Chennai Super Kings (CSK) probably for the last time.

Beyond the statistics and achievements, Dhoni became a symbol of composure under pressure, earning the respect of teammates and opponents. As the curtain already fell on his international career in 2020, the retirement of his iconic jersey is a fitting tribute to a cricketer who not only won matches but also captured the hearts of millions, leaving an enduring legacy in the annals of Indian cricket.
