Virat Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, showcased exceptional form in the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023, emerging as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with an impressive tally of 765 runs in just 11 matches at an average of 90.31. Despite this stellar performance, Kohli was rested for the T20I series against Australia and is also set to miss the upcoming T20I and ODI series against South Africa.

While Kohli is slated to participate in the Test series alongside captain Rohit Sharma, there are concerning reports indicating that he is no longer the first-choice player in India’s T20I XI. With the T20 World Cup scheduled for June 2024, discussions have shifted towards T20Is, and a recent five-hour meeting in New Delhi involving Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, and the selection committee has outlined a roadmap for the upcoming event in the West Indies and the USA.

Rohit Sharma is likely to lead India in T20 World Cup 2024

During the meeting, Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah conveyed to Rohit that he would lead the Indian side in the T20 World Cup. Despite Kohli’s outstanding performance in the ODI World Cup, it appears that he may not be considered for the T20I squad. However, a meeting with Kohli is likely to be scheduled to discuss his future in the shortest format, and the final decision will be reached after these discussions.

Although Kohli is currently the highest run-scorer in the T20I format globally, reports suggest that Ishan Kishan, the young wicketkeeper-batsman, is likely to secure the no. 3 spot in the T20I lineup. Kohli’s exclusion from the recent T20I series raises questions about his future in the format, but only time will reveal the accuracy of these reports.
