‘Lage haath opening bhi karwalo’ – Fans react as India likely to try Suryakumar Yadav at no. 6 in ODIs
India’s middle-order batter and the no. 1 ranked T20I batter in the world Suryakumar Yadav is currently the talk of the town as he is fighting to get a spot in India’s middle-order in the ODI format. Despite performing exceptionally well in the shortest format, Suryakumar has failed to cement his place in the 50-over format due to an inconsistent format in the recent series he has played so far.
Suryakumar produced a really poor performance against Australia in a 3-match series played earlier this year. He registered 3 consecutive golden ducks and also became the first Indian player to do so. However, many fans anticipated that Suryakumar could perform very well in the ongoing West Indies tour but that did not happen.
Despite having a great start in both the first and second ODI, Suryakumar failed to score big and missed two major opportunities to cement his place. However, some reports from The Indian Express are suggesting that the Indian team management is set to try Suryakumar at the no. 6 position in the ODI format.
I think Surya is a really good player: Rahul Dravid
Interestingly, it will raise some questions as the Indian vice-captain Hardik Pandya is one of the top contenders to play at the no. 6 position. Apart from him, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is also one of the players who is fighting to get a spot in the middle order. Meanwhile, India’s head coach Rahul Dravid talked about Suryakumar after the 2nd ODI and said that he is still learning and adapting to the ODI format.
“Unfortunately, I think he [Suryakumar] will be the first one to address that his ODI numbers have probably not been up to the high standards that he has set in the T20, but he is also learning about ODI cricket. I think Surya is a really good player. There is no doubt about it. His performances have shown that especially in T20 cricket and even in domestic cricket.” Dravid said after India’s loss in the 2nd ODI against West Indies.
