India still unsure of reaching the WTC final
India took a significant step closer to securing a spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final after defeating Australia by six wickets in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The WTC, which has spanned two years, has been characterized by intense competition, with teams fighting for control throughout the tournament.
The recent match between India and Australia was no different, with both teams attempting to gain the upper hand before Rohit Sharma’s men emerged victorious in a dramatic finale in Delhi.
The top two teams in the WTC standings will qualify for the final, and as a result of India’s win, the number of teams in contention has been reduced from four to three.
Despite the defeat, Australia still sits at the top of the standings with a percentage tally of 66.67%.
Meanwhile, India’s win in Delhi has increased their percentage to 64.06%, putting them ahead of the third-placed team by a considerable margin.
South Africa has been eliminated from contention for a spot in the final as they will be unable to reach the required percentage points to break into the top two.
Sri Lanka is the only team left with a chance to qualify for the final, currently sitting third in the standings with 53.33%.
South Africa and England having a PCT of 48.72 and 46.97 respectively, take the third and the fourth position on the WTC table.
However, they must win both Tests in their upcoming two-match series against New Zealand and rely on favorable results from the remaining Tests between India and Australia to have any chance of making it to the final.
The third Test between India and Australia will commence on March 1 in Indore.
The maximum PCT Sri Lanka can reach is 61.11. To beat that, India need to win at least one more Test match (two draws will not be sufficient – that will take them to 60.65).
If they win neither, they will have to back New Zealand to prevent Sri Lanka from pulling off a 2-0 sweep.
The league stage only has six more Test matches before it is complete – two in each of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Sri Lanka’s tour of New Zealand, and the West Indies’ tour of South Africa.
The race to qualification promises to provide more excitement and tension before the top two teams take to the field on June 7 with the coveted ICC WTC Mace and a place in history at stake.
