The ongoing clash between India and Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on October 11 witnessed a brilliant batting display from the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. Batting first, Afghanistan put up a total of 272 runs in the first innings.

Chasing the target, Rohit batted brilliantly and smashed a 63-ball century against Afghanistan. This is the fastest century ever by any Indian batter. Apart from that, he also became the player with the most hundreds in the history of ODI World Cups. He broke the record of former legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar who smashed 6 centuries. However, with this ton, Rohit has now 7 ODI World Cup centuries in his career.

Jasprit Bumrah picked up 4 wickets

Earlier, in the first innings, Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran had a decent start but failed to capitalize on it. When Rahmat Shah was dismissed, the team’s score was 63/3, and they were in a difficult situation. However, the decision to promote Azmatullah Omarzai worked well.

Alongside him, captain Hashmatalluah Shahidi steadied the innings and also hit some powerful shots against the spinners. Both batsmen reached their half-centuries, but the Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya‘s slower delivery removed Omarzai, disrupting the team’s rhythm and slowing down their scoring.

Captain Shahidi continued to build his innings and looked set to reach a century until he was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav after scoring 80 runs, which included 8 fours and 1 six. Jasprit Bumrah returned to the attack and took four wickets to prevent Afghanistan from reaching the 300-run mark. With his outstanding bowling performance, where he claimed 4 wickets and conceded only 39 runs in his 10 overs, Afghanistan was limited to a total of 272 runs.
