‘He will win the battle’ – Ravichandran Ashwin names star batter from Pakistan who he would lose to
Considered one of the greatest off-spinners of all time, Ravichandran Ashwin is on the verge of making history. With 490 wickets in 95 Test matches, the veteran Indian cricketer is the second-highest wicket-taker among active spinners. As India set to take on England in a five-match Test series at home, Ashwin is expected to overtake the table-topper Nathan Lyon (509 wickets).
With just 10 more wickets, he will be in the elite list of bowlers to take 500 or more Test wickets. Legendary spinner Anil Kumble is the only Indian to achieve this feat. Although Ashwin has not been a consistent figure in the ODI and T20I formats, he has been a vital cog for the Men in Blue in Tests over the years.
The 37-year-old has been able to pose a serious threat to the opposition during his illustrious career, especially in home conditions. Meanwhile, Ashwin recently came across an Instagram poll where fans were asked to pick who they think would win the individual battle if the 90s greats pitted against the modern-day stars. The India spinner’s match-up was against Pakistan legend Javed Miandad and he straightaway admitted that he would lose the battle.
Re-sharing the post on his Instagram story, Ashwin wrote: “Miandad will win the battle against me. What a fabulous player he was. I just wish there was a Time Machine”.
Other head-to-head battles were Virat Kohli vs Waqar Younis, Babar Azam vs Anil Kumble, Rohit Sharma vs Wasim Akram, and Sachin Tendulkar vs Shaheen Afridi.
Miandad boasts great track record against India
Ashwin’s opponent Miandad is known for his unconventional style of captaincy and batting. The 66-year-old has represented Pakistan in 124 Tests and 233 ODIs, scoring 16123 runs across formats, including 31 tons and 93 half-centuries. He also had a great track record against India, scoring 3403 runs in 63 matches, including eight tons and 20 half-centuries.
Ashwin is currently enjoying a break ahead of the series against England starting on January 25 in Hyderabad. He was last seen on the tour of South Africa, where India leveled the two-match Test series with a historic 7-wicket win in Cape Town.
