Mohammad Rizwan has been named as the new vice-captain of Pakistan. The star batter will be the deputy to Shaheen Afridi ahead of big series like Pakistan’s tour of NZ and the T20 WC 2024 which is set to happen later this year. There have been a lot of changes in Pakistan’s cricket in recent times, particularly regarding the captaincy across all the formats.

After the end of the ODI WC 2023, fans wanted some changes. Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy across all the formats of the game. It asked Pakistan to name different options as their captains for the new tournaments. Pakistan named Shan Masood as their Test captain and Shaheen Afridi as their T20I captain. Pakistan did not name any ODI captain.

In the recently concluded tour of Australia, Pakistan have come to a big decision of naming Rizwan as their vice-captain in T20Is. Ahead of the T20 WC 2024, there needs to be stability in leadership. Pakistan has thought of exactly that. As a result, they have named their new deputy for Rizwan. Given the fact that Shaheen is young, he probably needs a good deputy.

Big challenge for Pakistan

Pakistan did not have a great time in the recent past. In many series, they have underperformed as a team. The Asian side lost to Afghanistan in the T20I series for the first. They also lost to Afghanistan in the ODI WC 2023 for the first time in their history. Pakistan did not have a great time in the Asia Cup 2023 either, where they failed to qualify for the final. The challenge for Pakistan is huge.

In the T20 WC 2204, the fans would be asking for a better performance from the side. Given the fact that T20Is are the format in which Pakistan thrive, the fans have high goals set for the side. It might put the players under a bit of pressure. As a captain, Shaheen will have a difficult task ahead of him. Rizwan would be the perfect person to assist the new captain.
