In the third ODI against Bangladesh, which resulted in a draw, Indian Women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur received harsh criticism from many fans and former cricket players. When the trophy was being presented and both teams’ players were posing for pictures with it after the series ended up in a draw, Harmanpreet was observed acting inappropriately.

Meanwhile, former legendary captain of Pakistan Shahid Afridi recently opened up on the same incident and noted that while it has happened before, it is shocking that it occurred in women’s cricket. He claimed that by penalising Harmanpreet for her inappropriate attitude, the apex cricket body had set an example.

“This is not just India. We’ve seen these things in the past as well. Although, we don’t see this often in women’s cricket. This was way too much, it was a big event under the apex cricket body. With the punishment, you set an example for the future. You can get aggressive in cricket; controlled aggression is good, but this was a bit too much,” Afridi was quoted as saying by News 18.

Harmanpreet got banned for 2 international matches

For level 2 and level 1 infractions, the cricket governing body has penalised her 50% and 25% of the match fee, respectively and has received three demerit points. She is also banned from playing in 2 international matches in addition to these. Harmanpreet lost her composure and slammed the umpires, calling them “pathetic” throughout the duration of the series.

“I think (there is) a lot of learning for us from the game. Even apart from the cricket, the kind of umpiring that was happening, we were very surprised. The next time we come to Bangladesh we will make sure we have to deal with this type of umpiring and prepare ourselves accordingly. Some pathetic umpiring was done. We are really disappointed about some decisions given by the umpires,” Harmanpreet said in the post-match presentation.
