Harmanpreet Kaur hit the headlines for her misbehaviour during the third and final ODI against Bangladesh Women. After the umpire gave her out, she was not happy and hit the stumps with the bat while having some heated words towards the umpires.  Even, during the post-match presentation ceremony, she came up with some controversial behaviour.

Now, the Apex Council of Cricket came up with a decision and they suspended her for two matches for breaching the code of conduct. She also received three demerit points for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision. Hence, she is all set to miss the first two games for India Women in the upcoming Asian Games 2023.

“She has set a bad example for her teammates.” – Diana Edulji on Harmanpreet Kaur

Eventually, the Team India skipper became the first woman’s player to be handed a Level 2 sanction ever. Along with it, she was also fined 50% of her match fees. In addition to that, she received a separate Level 1 penalty along with a fine of 25% of her match fees for calling the umpiring in the series “pathetic.” However, her behaviour did not please former cricketers also as they slammed her on social media. While writing in her column for the Indian Express, former India captain Diana Edulji slammed her actions.

She wrote: “Cricketers reacting to a bad umpiring decision, though not ideal, is nothing new. To a certain extent, one can be pardoned since when you get out in a crunch match, sometimes it is difficult to control the emotions. Harmanpreet isn’t the first cricketer to show dissent and the ICC rightly imposed sanctions on her. I understand wrong decisions were made. We have seen wrong decisions in the past too, not only in women’s cricket but in men’s cricket too.”

“However, what happened post-game was not needed, all the more because Harmanpreet is the Indian captain. She has set a bad example for her teammates. I say that because juniors look up to seniors and this, over a period of time, can impact the team culture. This makes Harmanpreet’s behaviour all the more unacceptable,” Edulji further added.
