Former India cricketer feels Shreyas Iyer’s Test spot is in danger
During the two-match Test series against South Africa, Shreyas Iyer had a horror show in all four innings of his batting. Apart from a 30-odd in the first innings of the first Test, he failed to cross double digit on two occasions. In the last innings of the series, Iyer hit winning runs. Most batters from both teams struggled especially in the second Test which India won.
The wicket at the Newlands, Cape Town was such that the second Test was finished within two days. It was the shortest Test match in the history of the game as it was finished in 107 overs. Aiden Markram was the only one to score a hundred during the game. Meanwhile, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has claimed that KL Rahul is competing with Iyer in the middle-order spot in the Test team.
The former scored a hundred in the first Test, won by South Africa.
Shreyas Iyer might lose his Test place to KL Rahul
Manjrekar feels that Iyer might lose his place in the team as when Rishabh Pant comes in, he will play as the wicketkeeper batter.
Appearing on Star Sports, he said, “I think he’s a guy who cares about every format. You know how he’s built to value every opportunity that he gets after he got that 100. You know, I am looking two years from now and I thought he’s really competing with Shreyas Iyer for a batting position in the middle order because the moment Rishabh Pant is fit, he becomes your keeper batter, and there’s great quality to Rishabh Pant batting and keeping as well.”
“That innings was just incredible (First Test hundred). Unfortunately, you know, Dean Elgar got a 180, they got 400 because we at the time thought that 260 was gonna be enough. And that was the moment if India could have latched onto, there would have been a series win in South Africa,” he added.
